Waterproofing 3-D prints from the makers

  • epoxy coat after or purpose made 3DP coating-- add commercial versions here:

Using Coating as a waterproofing Technique

Coating and Lamination

Singa, K.A review on coating & Lamination in Textiles:Processes and Applications,American Journal of Polymer Science,2012

  • Polyurethane (PU) is used to waterproof clothing
  • Perfluoro, Polyacrylates, PVC, and Vinylacetate are chemicals used as coatings for waterproofing
  • Butadiene Polyurethane resin is also used as a coating to waterproof objects
  • Direct and transfer coating are best for waterproofing

Using 3D prints

3D Printed Underwater VR

Zhang, W. Tien Tan, C. Chen, T. Demo: A safe Low-cost HMD for Underwater VR Experiences, Mobile Graphics and Interactive Applictions, Article 12, 2016

  • 3D printers are able to print parts that are waterproof
  • Specific density and infill settings are needed
  • Can 3D print components that prevent leaks

Underwater Homes

Champion, B. Jamshidi, M. Joordens, M. 3D Printed Underwater Housing, World Automation Congress (WAC), 2016

  • Polylactic Acid (PLA) absorbs water since it is bio-degradable
  • Acrylonitrile Butadine Styrene (ABS) is a stong material
  • ABS does not absorb water so no coating is needed
  • ABS can be smoothed by a coating of acetone which prevents leakage
  • Waterproof seals can be a flat seal, O-ring, or gasket
