Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a hardy perennial herb. It originated in Europe and Asia.[1] It is a robust herb. The flowers make this a pretty border or garden plant.
Description
Valerian is a graceful and tall herb that grows to around 100 to 150cm (40 to 60 inches) tall.
The leaves are feathery in appearance.
Valerian has white to pink or red flowers. The plant flowers from early to mid summer.
Growing valerian
Choose a position in semi-shade. The soil should be moist, rich, loamy and well draining.[1] However, the plant will tolerate dry soil and sun if necessary but it won't grow as lushly.
The plant will easily self seed.
Uses for valerian
The roots, when dried and ground, can be used as a tea to calm and can be useful for persons who find it hard to sleep.[2][1]
The root oil is used as a flavor for beverages.[1]
