Hi Kathy

Yes - I saw what you are doing and that is great - I put in a new link for the one I had a link for and deleted the others that were just dead links. I would ask, however, if possible when you delete the dead links only delete the links not the references that went with them as then we lose knowledge too. Someone can then go back and find a new open access link if they exist. Thanks for all your hard work - Joshua Pearce (talk) 10:29, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

thanks for edits![edit source]

Hi, Kathy Nativi - Welcome to Community action for sustainability wiki, and thanks for your recent edit or edits to our wiki articles! Philralph (talk) 17:53, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Kathy, sorry but there are loads of old news templates no longer in use which ideally I would have got round to marking for deletion! You can check via 'what links here', left hand menu.

The current equivalent, just plain news articles, sometimes needing much redesign (but that's another story! no worries about that here!) can be found via CASwiki news.

It helps to include eg dead link removed (in place of any link removed from CASwiki articles).

Many thanks for all that you do! Philralph (talk) 17:53, 31 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

CASwiki links[edit source]

Hi Kathy, thanks for recent edits to links. Something strange appears to have happened with Food activism UK, large section of article removed, which I've put back, plus updated the first link (previously not found). Let me know if anything else needed to this. Sometimes updated links can be found relatively easily just with a bit of searching. This and perhaps quite a few other CASwiki food activism articles could do with a better layout, but that's just one of those things I never seem to find the time to get started on! best wishes Philralph (talk) 08:46, 11 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Automatic wikitext standardization[edit source]

Hi! Just wanted to let you know that I just replaced the normalization tool (the little magic wand) with a more robust tool that fixes wikitext automatically every time you (or anyone) saves a page. More details at Appropedia:Village pump#Automatic wikitext standardization, cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 14:46, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Big categories[edit source]

Kathy -- please don't cut our group's main pages down to nothing - they are our major navigators. - - Joshua Pearce (talk) 10:23, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Joshua! I understand your concern. The changes were made to refine content and minimize errors in the "Category" section. But to preserve the content during this process, I've created a dedicated page with it. Kathy Nativi (talk) 13:50, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I reverted all of our live categories that we are still contributing to and using on a daily basis - as pulling the content out of the pages that are cats substantially less useful. It does not seem to impact performance even if there is an error somewhere -- I left all the ones you did for pages/cat that are no longer active.--Joshua Pearce (talk) 18:08, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Recent edits to CASwiki pages[edit source]

Hi @Kathy, thanks for the edit to A road map to zero carbon for your own local community.

Re the edit to Sustainable livelihood UK news, I don't think it's a good idea to have anything before the news items as they are deliberately at the top of the page as dynamic content, and often on news and other pages add more colour and context to what otherwise might seem fairly dry content. Also the news items work particularly well, again as dynamic content in page previews, enabling easy scanning of news items across multiple topics or locations. The text could still be included though so I've just moved it down a bit. If it's useful to include something like this on news pages generally, as there are so many now, and potentially many more, we'd probably need to use some sort of template, but I understand @Sophivorus is keen for us not to have too many templates, so wondering if it's really that useful? Philralph (talk) 18:20, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If avoiding SEO issues is important or useful enough (?) would it make sense to consider using some sort of AI generated one sentence summary of each page, at least as a draft, where needed? Not sure that sounds a good idea, as if so wouldn't all do it (?) So all becoming a bit incestuous (?)... more advice needed! Philralph (talk) 18:50, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Kathy, having thought a bit more about your suggestion re Sustainable livelihood UK news I think I'm better understanding and appreciating the usefulness and wisdom of including a sentence as you did at the top, so have reverted to your edit. I really like your wording. I'll have a think about how other pages can be similarly improved, following your suggestion. If you could help with any other pages, especially the news pages with similar intro sentences that be brilliant! Thanks, Philralph (talk) 10:02, 30 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Philralph Hi! I agree that having all pages start with a sentence is generally a good idea, because it improves SEO as well as search results within Appropedia and previews when hovering over links, not to mention plain-old clarity for people as to what the page about. That being said, if in some case a leading sentence is not desirable, there's always the "description" parameter in Template:Page data that can be used to feed a sentence to search engines (Google, etc) directly, without needing to start the page with a sentence, though that wont help for link previews and other uses, so the leading sentence is still preferable. Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 12:54, 10 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Kathy, thanks for recent edits to Kent pages. I've developed model text on other place pages eg Scotland community action, Community resources Scotland and Scotland news which hopefully will be reasonably OK for SEO purposes. I'm OK not using templates for now to keep the possibility of locally modified text, but will keep under review. So have incorporated these on the Kent pages and will gradually make similar changes to all other place pages over time. The much smaller number of topic orientated pages eg Sustainable livelihood, Sustainable livelihood news and the UK equivalents perhaps have greater scope for creativity in devising a really good opening sentence for SEO purposes as you did on Sustainable livelihood UK news, Thanks and best wishes, Philralph (talk) 08:42, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you! Adding a first paragraph to each page is a great way to prevent "missing meta description" errors. Please make sure that after any 'Topic notice', like the one on the Sustainable Livelihood page, a text paragraph follows rather than an image file. Google's crawler might otherwise use the image as the meta description, which won't help our SEO ranking. Kathy Nativi (talk) 15:23, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Got it! Thanks, Philralph (talk) 15:39, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deleted my ConservationEconomy.net page on Appropedia.[edit source]

Kathy -- You deleted my incomplete page. I will be happy to add content to it to make it realistic to leave it in place. I wish you had contacted me directly, instead of just deleting the content that was there. It now presents a broken link on my UserPage. Can we retrieve the copy that you deleted, please, and then I will work with you to add relevant new content so that I can quickly satisfy the need to make it more explanatory what this is about? I am starting multiple pages that need work, knowing that those topics are important and that I have to find time to flesh out the details or find other people who will help curate the relevant content.

Please advise!

Hi Tom! Apologies for deleting your page. I'm currently removing incomplete pages that haven't been updated or worked on for a while because they're not beneficial for our SEO and may contain links to pages that haven't been created yet (like EcoTrust). I've republished your page, but I would appreciate it if you could work on it whenever you have the opportunity. Let me know if I can assist you with something. Thanks! Kathy Nativi (talk) 03:29, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, Kathy. Thank you very much. I will visit and update some today. EcoTrust evidently removed its version and will not replace it, so people will have to work from the Web Archive version to see what this is all about. I did have permission years ago from EcoTrust to recreate the web pages and generate a new version of the pages to reflect different geographical areas in the case studies, library, and references for each of the patterns. That is what I am hoping might get recreated inside the Appropedia system eventually.
I had a good introductory discussion with Emelio about cooperative engagements. Maybe we can find someone who is very good at doing Appropedia page designs, and I can hire them to convert the old EcoTrust version into a new version for posting entirely in Appropedia? I'm interested in exploring that idea if you can help me to find anyone who might be interested. I am talking with some local college students about doing similar work, and I can see if perhaps they will want to help tackle this project.
THANK YOU!
