Libre office[edit source]

Thanks-- You are absolutely right -- I actually use Libre now too -- I updated the page and made a quick landing page on appropedia for it -- Libre Office-- Joshua 11:02, 15 January 2013 (PST)

user talk[edit source]

Joe -- you may also want to move the your self description from your user talk page to your user page. --Joshua 11:03, 15 January 2013 (PST)

oops, you are absolutely right.. Joeturner 11:30, 15 January 2013 (PST)

sanivation[edit source]

I would say that is definitely appropriate for Appropedia-- I had not seen this application of solar energy before! Pretty interesting -- Joshua 18:11, 15 January 2013 (PST)

I would put it in both the solar energy categories but also the sanitation ones -- the beauty of the wiki is that after you have it up others will help categorize and link back to it as they deem appropriate over time so you dont have to do everything all at once. -- Joshua 04:28, 16 January 2013 (PST)

Replied[edit source]

Replied on my talk page. Sorry for the delay - and thanks for the comments and suggestions. --Chriswaterguy 05:19, 25 January 2013 (PST)

Category pages that need moving[edit source]

Category pages with content that need to be moved to mainspace can be added here. User:Chriswaterguy/Wikignome/Category page content to be moved with history - list #Next!

If you're not sure, add a note and I'll check them out, or discuss on the category talk page as you've been doing. Thanks. --Chriswaterguy 22:32, 10 February 2013 (PST)

Moving[edit source]

Some quirks of MediaWiki and how we use it...

Moving pages:

Re Talk:Humanure or reutilizing your own body wastes - your comment "Hmm, this is a bit odd, talk page diverted to humanure whilst the page did not. recommend this page is removed. Joeturner 03:20, 12 February 2013 (PST)"

I think if we click move when viewing the article, the talk page is moved by default (unless we deselect that option, and unless there's a talk page already at the target). Not so if we're viewing the talk page. Perhaps that's the issue?

Moving content:

For duplicate content, I think it's good to create a redirect rather than deleting the page itself, just in case someone has bookmarked the page. More importantly, when content is moved, then (getting in touch with my inner pedant here, re CC licensing) then maintaining the attribution chain is an issue.

The way I do that is that if I paste content from one page into another, I note in the edit summary where the content came from (using [[ ]] to link the source page). (Similarly, the edit summary on the source page can be helpful for the person wondering "Where did the stuff I wrote go...?") Hope that makes sense - let me know if it doesn't. --Chriswaterguy 17:40, 13 February 2013 (PST)

Oh, and thanks for your spam-tagging and other good work here - much appreciated, and great to see this area developing! --Chriswaterguy 17:49, 13 February 2013 (PST)

Travel guides[edit source]

(Your comment on Talk:Goa - India - moving here and deleting that page.

Hmm.. a travel guide to Goa? I think that is spam. Joeturner 06:25, 22 February 2013 (PST)
Agreed, in this case. But there's a good case for guides to places, for development workers and volunteers, helping with practical details as well as cultural issues. --Chriswaterguy 20:59, 23 February 2013 (PST)

Adminship[edit source]

Welcome to adminship! See Appropedia:Guidelines_for_administrators for some very under-developed admin advice. I think you will love the new delete - spam - features. Let us know if you have any questions. --Lonny 17:22, 8 March 2013 (PST)

copying content?[edit source]

Hey Joe,

I noted that the Category:Composting toilets had no description, so i'm copying the description from Composting toilets page to serve as a useful stub description. Just thought I ought mention since I saw "used with permission" on the page and didn't want to violate, assuming some of that content is yours. --Ajay (aka @) 17:51, 13 April 2013 (PDT)

thanks, that is an old tag, not sure the page bears much resemblance to the original any more. Good point on the cat description. Joeturner 23:44, 13 April 2013 (PDT)

Compost & black soldier fly[edit source]

What do you think of Black Soldier Fly as a way of processing waste, including animal products (meat scraps, waste dairy products)? --Chriswaterguy 23:39, 13 April 2013 (PDT)

some potential hazards there too, but may be a lot more reliable than small scale microbial breakdown of meat. Problem with microbio is that without monitoring, you can incubate very nasty pathogens in meat. Joeturner 23:51, 13 April 2013 (PDT)
heard some interesting new things about this. on the one hand, some are getting very excited about it, on the other that microbiologists are worried that the flies might themselves be important vectors for disease. So feeding the larvae to animals might not prove to be the brightest of ideas.. 08:01, 13 June 2013 (PDT)

Using feces[edit source]

Hi Joe, I have a question about using human feces as manure. Appearantly, using human feces as is (as opposed to ie animal feces) can cause ilnesses (see Night soil). I'm not sure exactly what ilnesses these are, can you state exactly which ilnesses these are, perhaps mention in article aswell ? Next I was wondering about the practical use; is it safe to use human feces directly in a compost heap, and then use this compost directly on plants ? Alternatively, if it isn't safe, what measures can be taken to make it 100% safe (I read about simply letting it lie for a year or so (see Humanure) but I still don't think that makes it entirely safe ? Also, what are the legal sidelines with this (in the americas and other continents (Europe, Asia, ...)? Is it legal to use it as noted ? If it isn't legal, is it possible to use human feces when it's been composted first (so as is from a compost toilet, after having it sit 1 year), can it be transported when fresh (uncomposted) for examle to a composting site, ... ? Thanks[edit source]

Thanks for the deletions. You'll be glad to know I've spent half a day applying duct tape to our anti-spam tool. The torrent should abate somewhat now. --Chriswaterguy 07:56, 13 June 2013 (PDT)

Oh, and I see that over 12,000 edits have been blocked by the tool. Not bad. --Chriswaterguy 07:57, 13 June 2013 (PDT)
Mmm. hope it makes a difference! Joeturner 07:59, 13 June 2013 (PDT)
