Hi Joe.  I was the one that got permission from PA years ago when we were operating under GNU license, and they gave permission to publish under that license (they have given similar permission to other groups, so it seems clear they want to get the stuff broadly circulated).  We informed them of our license change when that happened (in accordance with the rules for license changing as we understood them), but didn't hear anything. == Primary Surgery Wiki ==
I just found the [[Primary Surgery Wiki]],[http://ps.cnis.ca/wiki/index.php/Main_Page] via the Appropedia page - looks very interesting, and I thought you'd like to know. Not active lately, but there might be an intention to share it under a compatible license. The only reference I could find to licensing on the site was mostly inside a hidden comment on the main page:
:<tt><nowiki>The Primary Surgery Wiki is an online and ongoing project to update and expand the content of Primary Surgery and to make it available for everybody. <!-- according to the [http://creativecommons.org Creative Commons Licensing] and open access publishing. --></nowiki></tt>
I wonder if this could be a good start for the kind of medical info we'd like to have. Certainly outside our main area, and I can understand their policy of only having surgeons and a few wiki experts edit the site, but... at the very least we could aim to summarize relevant parts, and link to them for specifics of surgery.
I've applied for an account, mentioned Appropedia and suggested we get in touch. --[[User:Chriswaterguy|Chriswaterguy]] 02:15, 18 November 2011 (PST)

Welcome

Hi Joe,

It is great to have you here. Thanks for your contributions so far. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks, --Lonny 23:42, 6 December 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Appropriate Health care manual

Hey Joe, answered your comments at http://www.appropedia.org/User_talk:KVDP#Appropriate_health_care_manual Yours sincerely, KVDP 13:34, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Offline content collaboration

Seeing some of the pages you've made, I thought you might be interested in Offline content collaboration and other pages in Category:Knowledge sharing.

Btw, I also left a comment at User talk:Filceolaire - I assume that's you, so you may want to add a redirect at the user and talk page. Cheers. --Chriswaterguy 06:47, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Organizations

We've been intending to get in contact with the organizations you're making pages about - I'm curious whether you have any connections with them?

We've recently been contacted by The Hesperian Foundation and Eldis - I don't know if they're willing or able to release content in an open way that's compatible with Appropedia, but we'll see! --Chriswaterguy 21:37, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have no connections with them except that when I worked in Africa, back in the eighties, these were resources that we referred to. While it might be nice if all these organisations were to publish all their information through Appropedia that will not happen overnight. In the meantime we can have links to all the best information with user reviews and comparisons so Appropedia becomes the starting point for any Appropriate tech info search.
The hesperian Foundation has a wonderful collection of tried and tested medical and healthcare information. At the moment it is tied up in pdfs so they need to linkify it and a wiki is one way to do that in a collaborative way. They are, rightly, worried about keeping the medical information sound so there is an issue to be resolved there (We could say changes to medical pages have to be approved - there is an addon for mediawiki software for this) but we could certainly collaborate.
Eldis seems to be more of a clearing house and publisher for papers. They have thousands of papers which hardly anyone ever downloads. As information scientists they will have been watching Wikipedia in fascination and they may have some interesting ideas they would like to try out with us. Lets get a tie up with them before they decide to start their own wiki.Joe Raftery 16:04, 19 December 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Good thoughts! Re medical pages, I'd like to explore an extension called FlaggedRevs, so I just added that to Appropedia:Desired features. Very busy at the moment, but if you don't hear an update from me by late January re our Hesperian and Eldis, feel free to prod me. (And of course earlier than that if you have ideas about engaging them.) --Chriswaterguy 22:23, 19 December 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

all i did

was move the attribution from the page to the talk page. Emesee

Non-free images

Re User_talk:Emesee#Talk:Pleioblastus_Distichus, I'm not sure if copyright applies to such a small amount of text. The real concern is the image, Media:Pleioblastus Distichus.jpg. I think there are many images from WikiGreen which are non-free and need to only be used our {{open access}} pages. (And we either use free alternatives for our regular free content pages, or get proper permission from t copyright holders.)

It needs serious attention - thanks for your work on this! --Chriswaterguy 12:14, 10 January 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

UN & permissions

Re United Nations Population Fund, the (c) and Terms of Use for www.unfpa.org aren't strictly compatible with our CC-BY-SA license, as they disallow commercial use. (Same goes for pretty much all UN & World Bank sites, I think.)

Not that I expect them to make a fuss about one page on our wiki, but thinking about our strategy here, as we make more organization pages.

This can be dealt with by rewriting, though that's a lot bit of work. Another thing that will help, though, is the project to make lots of stubs: Appropedia:Stubs from Wikipedia articles. (That's a lot of work too, and it's just me that's enthusiastic about it - but I figure that culling articles is quicker than writing them, and then they can have content added to fill in missing areas - even taking a sentence here and there from another website, with less concern about copyright than if we were copying whole pages.

How does that sound? I hope to take steps on this stub project in the next couple of weeks. --Chriswaterguy 15:08, 11 January 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Moves

Thanks for the page moves.

Note Vaccination is now in its place. FYI, you should be able to move over a redirect, if the page has no other history. --Chriswaterguy 23:44, 13 January 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hexayurt Cooling - thank you!

Great stuff, thank you! I'll try and make a pass over the page to check details, but it all looks right on the first read. Lovely! --Vinay Gupta 09:55, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
