We've been intending to get in contact with the organizations you're making pages about - I'm curious whether you have any connections with them? 

We've recently been contacted by [[The Hesperian Foundation]] and [[Eldis]] - I don't know if they're willing or able to release content in an open way that's compatible with Appropedia, but we'll see! --[[User:Chriswaterguy|Chriswaterguy]] 21:37, 16 December 2009 (UTC) 

:I have no connections with them except that when I worked in Africa, back in the eighties, these were resources that we referred to. While it might be nice if all these organizations were to publish all their information through Appropedia that will not happen overnight. In the meantime we can have links to all the best information with user reviews and comparisons so Appropedia becomes the starting point for any Appropriate tech info search.

:The hesperian Foundation has a wonderful collection of tried and tested medical and healthcare information. At the moment it is tied up in pdfs so they need to linkify it and a wiki is one way to do that in a collaborative way. They are, rightly, worried about keeping the medical information sound so there is an issue to be resolved there (We could say changes to medical pages have to be approved - there is an addon for mediawiki software for this) but we could certainly collaborate.

:[[Eldis]] seems to be more of a clearing house and publisher for papers. They have thousands of papers which hardly anyone ever downloads. As information scientists they will have been watching Wikipedia in fascination and they may have some interesting ideas they would like to try out with us. Re [[User_talk:Emesee#Talk:Pleioblastus_Distichus]], I'm not sure if copyright applies to such a small amount of text. The real concern is the image, [[Media:Pleioblastus Distichus.jpg]]. I think there are many images from  [[WikiGreen]] which are non-free and need to only be used  our {{tl|open access}} pages. (And we either use free alternatives for our regular free content pages, or get proper permission from t copyright holders.)

== UN & permissions ==

Re [[United Nations Population Fund]], the [http://web.archive.org/web/20120918102351/http://www.unfpa.org:80/public/pid/3802Copyrights (c) and Terms of Use for www.unfpa.org] aren't strictly compatible with our CC-BY-SA license, as they disallow commercial use. (Same goes for pretty much all UN & World Bank sites, I think.) 

Not that I expect them to make a fuss about one page on our wiki, but thinking about our strategy here, as we make more organization pages.

This can be dealt with by rewriting, though that's a lot bit of work. Another thing that will help, though, is the project to make lots of stubs: [[Appropedia:Stubs from Wikipedia articles]]. (That's a lot of work too, and it's just me that's enthusiastic about it - but I figure that culling articles is quicker than writing them, and then they can have content added to fill in missing areas - even taking a sentence here and there from another website, with less concern about copyright than if we were copying whole pages.

Hi Joe.  I was the one that got permission from PA years ago when we were operating under GNU license, and they gave permission to publish under that license (they have given similar permission to other groups, so it seems clear they want to get the stuff broadly circulated).  We informed them of our license change when that happened (in accordance with the rules for license changing as we understood them), but didn't hear anything. :I did talk to Neil Noble from PA sometime after that, in mid-2008, and they seemed pretty relaxed about licensing. I seem to remember we talked about CC-by-sa as well (which is the same as Gnu FDL in important aspects). I wish I had my notes in electronic form, but they seemed happy with that kind of license, broadly speaking.

== Primary Surgery Wiki ==

I just found the [[Primary Surgery Wiki]],[http://web.archive.org/web/20130517220334/http://ps.cnis.ca:80/wiki/index.php/Main_Page] via the Appropedia page - looks very interesting, and I thought you'd like to know. Not active lately, but there might be an intention to share it under a compatible license. The only reference I could find to licensing on the site was mostly inside a hidden comment on the main page:
