Internship

Hi Brylie,

Great to hear from you, and sorry for the slow response.

I checked the Woolman site - looks like a great place to learn.

Re the internship - we'd be very interested in having you. You mention "Drupal, WordPress, Joomla!, MySQL, Apache, Bash/SSH, and am learning Python, HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript." WordPress and CSS skills are handy here. Javascript, MySQL and Bash/SSH could come in handy too. Perhaps Python - I run a bot on the wiki (to add categories and wikilinks, among other things) which is actually a set of Python scripts - most of the work I do, though, is with regular expressions for search-and-replace.

MediaWiki, which is our biggest area of work, is written in PHP, like WordPress. Not as user-friendly as WordPress, but an extremely powerful platform.

"mesh networking, distributed social networks, low power FM, encryption, etc.." - that's all great stuff, and you'll find people in the Appropedia community who are into these. It's not really within the scope of the tech internship, but if you wanted to contribute knowledge about these subjects, we'd certainly support that.

We have a task management system here for site development: https://secure.bettermeans.com/projects/181/dashboard - I planned to pick out some tasks that might be interesting to you, but I wonder if you're ok to have a skim through yourself? We have a bunch of projects there, and will have some more soon. We have a dev site too, for testing - whatissustainability dot org (we don't leave the raw link here, to avoid confusion with the real site).

I hope that's of interest to you. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

If you're still interested, pick one or two small things to look at first from that BetterMeans dashboard. Go for the higher priority items in preference (green up arrow on the right). Also see this: Appropedia:Tech intern team/Tour - that can help get you started. Feel free to check out the site, or drop a note at the Village Pump. I'll leave our standard welcome below, as well. Thanks for getting in touch! --Chriswaterguy 11:01, 24 September 2011 (PDT)

Welcome!

Appropedia-logo.jpg

Hi Brylie,

Welcome to the Appropedia wiki. Please make yourself at home! If you need a general wiki-tutorial, see the main help page (or the more in-depth one on WikiEducator).

Check your preferences and be sure you verify your email address and turn on email notification if you'd like it -- you can find out when your talk page, or any page on your watchlist, is modified. You may want to upload a photo or information about yourself to your userpage (which is at User:Brylie).

If you have a particular interest or project in mind, go ahead and start it! If you have questions or suggestions, the best place to leave them is at our community discussion page, which we call the Village pump - you should get a fast response. Or, feel free to leave me a note on my talk page if you have further questions, need help finding your way around, have a cool idea for a project, or just want to chat.

Glad to have you here!

CSS

Hi Brylie,

You mentioned CSS as one of your areas, so I want to let you know about User:RichardF. He's been taking initiative with work around layout and appearance on the site, though not directly with CSS. He's revamped our Portals and gallery layout, and suggested an alternative table class. Not sure how close that is to CSS work, but might be of interest.

Cheers --Chriswaterguy 01:09, 25 September 2011 (PDT)
