Name: Ryan Gustafson

I am an Environmental Resources Engineering student at Cal Poly Humboldt, California. This simple fact about me would not be a possibility if it were not for a trip I took to Yosemite National Park in the summer of 2008. During that trip, I completed a sixteen mile round-trip, very strenuous hike to the top of the park's most well known landmark: Half Dome. This hike completely changed my life from that day on as it gave me an entirely new outlook on the world and what it has to offer. I became attached to nature from that day on, and it has led me to a major where I can help not only protect the land that I now hold so dearly, but also the people that surround it.

Interests in Engineering

  • The general ability to solve environmental problems and have a positive impact on the world through knowledge of scientific, mathematical, and engineering expertise. I am a bit unsure right now as of which specialization in environmental engineering that I am most interested in, though I am currently taking an Introduction to Environmental Engineering course which should help with this decision. Ultimately, I am interested in the aspects of environmental engineering that focus on the concepts of chemistry and biology while still utilizing the backbone of physics and mathematics that engineering is known for.

Experience in Engineering

  • Nothing specific yet. Some previous physics labs might apply, but I am taking my first engineering courses this semester at HSU and am looking forward to getting my hands dirty.
