Name: Merissa Schneider-Coppolino

I'm a student at Cal Poly Humboldt studying Environmental Resource Engineering. I love to dance, travel and play the piano. I have been taking modern dance classes since I was three years old. I want to travel around the world some day, but my first stop will definitely be Italy.

Interests in Engineering[edit | edit source]

  • Creating a sustainable energy source that utilizes natural resources, is ecofriendly and relatively inexpensive
  • Cleaning up the pollution in the atmosphere
  • Getting the United States to produce less pollution

Experience in Engineering[edit | edit source]

  • In high school I participated in the Green Club, an environmental club that promotes sustainability within Corvallis High School and the greater community. We competed for and won a $20,000 grant towards the purchase and instillation of solar panels for our school.
  • I was one of two architects assigned to draw up blueprints of a townhouse and assisted in its reconstruction.
  • I participated in PowerShift West, a youth conference focused on climate change issues and solutions. It Included speakers, panels and workshops concentrating on thinking globally but acting locally.

Portfolio[edit | edit source]

In Introduction to design, ENGR 215, at Cal Poly Humboldt I was part of team Triad Design along with Greg Pfotenhauer and Hannah Spittler. The majority of this class consisted of a design project, which is going to be placed in the Samoa Hostel in Samoa, CA. Our client Sean Armstrong, a project manager at Danco Communities, asked us to build a Pedal Powered Generator, dubbed Pain in the Axle to be placed in the hostel. Here are some of the documents I completed while working on this project:

  • As a collaborative effort of Triad Design we wrote a design document that explained the purpose of our project, our criteria, background information about pedal power, our alternative designs and our final solution.
  • In order to keep ourselves organized and on schedule, we made made a Gantt chart at the start of the project.
  • Once the inner workings of the project were complete, I created an AutoCAD drawing of the Recumbent Exercise Bike and the pulley system. I also drew up the side view of our Permanent Magnet DC Generator.
  • When turning in each part of the document, a cover memo had to be present. This is a copy of the cover memo I wrote up for the first section of our document: Cover Memo
  • Throughout the project each group member was required to keep track of the amount of time spent on the project and other class related work. Here is an .xls and PDF version of my final time sheet: Time Sheet (xls) & Time Sheet (PDF)
  • I also wrote up a brochure that is going to placed in the Samoa Hostel along with our bike powered generator.
