I have been working as a consultant and professor since 1989. My work at my business GreenWay Partners (greenwaypartners.net) covers the overlapping fields of business sustainability, land use planning and transportation planning, energy issues (efficiency and renewables), futures (scenario) planning, green economic development, regenerative design, resilience and adaptation planning, social media and transition management. I have worked with national, state, county and local entities to create, implement and evaluate resource management strategies for a diverse range of needs and applications.

I earned my Ph.D. (1994) in Environment and Resources and my M.S. (1990) in Energy Analysis and Policy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a B.A. (1985) from St. Olaf College in Philosophy and Religion. I have been a professor at Emory, James Madison and Humboldt State universities, teaching courses in economics, energy analysis and policy, geography, public policy and planning, and regenerative design. I am currently an adjunct professor in Humboldt State University’s Environmental Resources Engineering department.

From 1990-1995 I was a Senior Analyst with the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation (a 501(c)(3) corporation in Madison, Wisconsin) where I worked with federal, state and municipal governments to design and administer measurement and evaluation (M&E) protocols for energy efficiency programs and energy regulatory policies, focusing on low-income households. I have written articles for policy journals (Energy Policy, Policy Sciences) and presented my research at national and international conferences. For 11 years (1998-2009) I was the Assistant Director of the University National Park Energy Partnership Program (UNPEPP), working with universities and National Parks across the nation to facilitate better energy practices in national park facilities through better data management and analysis, and through the development of more effective energy management practices. Prior to joining GreenWay, I was a Senior Planner with Planwest Partners in Arcata, where I helped develop land use and transportation policy and planning approaches for governments and nonprofit organizations.

I am active in my community. I have served on several local committees and councils, was a school board member for six years, volunteer weekly in school classrooms, and have coached over 20 youth sports teams. I live in Arcata with my wife Eileen Cashman and two sons, Pearse and Kai.
