Benjamin Hubbard is a Mechanical Engineering student at Michigan Technological University. He has pursued interests in Electrical Engineering through an EE minor and electronics hobby projects, and an interest in the Spanish language and cultures through a Spanish minor, as well as travelling to Costa Rica, Peru, and Chile through programs during his education. After graduating with a Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Ben plans to pursue graduate research working on Open Source Hardware/Software with J.M.Pearce. He is currently studying the world of Open Source Hardware and Software through MSE4777 at Michigan Tech. During this experience he has completed construction of an AthenaII Delta-style 3D printer, developed skills using open source CAD software including OpenSCAD, FreeCAD, and Blender. Ben is currently working on the development of an Open Source 3-D Printable Digital Balance. This project aims to develop a lab-grade mass balance at a low cost. The first iteration achieved 0.1g precision with a 5000g range. Further development will branch in two directions to produce a benchtop version with data logging capability (through serial connection), and a standard use version with external power and an LCD display.
