Problem being addressed
Multiple drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is an increasing problem. Drug resistance occurs as a result of the incomplete or incorrect use of antibiotics in the treatment of patients with tuberculosis. In order to increase compliance with tuberculosis drug regimens and improve outcomes in developing countries, the uBox Electronic Pillbox reminds patients when to take their medication and tracks their history for healthcare workers to evaluate at the conclusion of a treatment cycle.
Detailed description of the solution
The uBox is unique among uNotify devices because it enables patients to take medication themselves. It enables patients who are able to adhere to their regimen to do so on their own, without having to travel to their healthcare provider. The uBox is a palm-sized, intelligent pill dispenser, which reminds patients when it is time to take their medication and records when they do. It also tracks visits by program personnel and requires only monthly refilling.
Designed by
- Design: A team of MIT researchers in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Microsystems Technology Laboratories developed the uBox. The IDEAS and D-Lab teams at MIT are currently working on modifications. Manish Bhardwaj is the main contact for this project.
When and where it was tested/implemented
Health care workers successfully conducted user studies of the uBox in collaboration with the Prajnopaya Foundation in three districts in Bihar, India: Patna, Samastipur and Bihar Sharif. The uBox has mainly been implemented in Bihar.
Funding Source
Funding sources include the Prajnopaya Foundation, philanthropy and MIT. uBox has won several awards, including the Yunus Challenge to Alleviate Poverty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an Advanced Entrepreneurship grant from NCIIA/Lemelson Foundation, and the RGK Winner's Cup at the University of Austin.
