Electrostatic Powder Coating - Peer Edit

Introduction:

- This sentence could be edited: "Compared to traditional liquid coatings, powder coatings have shown to be more durable, impact resistance, corrosion resistance, and chemical resistant" To: Compared to traditional liquid coatings, powder coatings are more durable, impact resistant, corrosion resistant and chemically resistant.

- This section sounds/reads a little awkward: "There are four main steps in the powder coating process, charging, transport, adhesion / deposition, and finally curing [1]. The basic principle behind powder coating is a charged particle, usually a polymer, is accelerated toward a grounded work piece and is adhered to the work piece by means of electrostatic attraction. The coated work piece is then cured at an elevated temperature transforming the powder coating into a smooth, and uniform polymer film."

A possible edit: There are four main steps in the powder coating process: Charging, Transport, Adhesion/Deposition and Curing. (In this sentence, it would be helpful to include hyper links to the corresponding wiki articles of each technical term.) In powder coating, a charged particle, usually a polymer, is accelerated towards a grounded work piece and adhered to it by electrostatic attraction. The coated work piece is then cured at an elevated temperature, transforming the powder coating into a smooth and uniform polymer film. (Once again, it would be helpful to the average reader if technical terms such as "electrostatic attraction" were hyper linked to wiki articles)

Powder Charging and Transport:

- Small edit to this sentence: "At the tip of the spray gun is a pointed corona electrode charged with a very high voltage."

To: At the tip of the spray gun there is a pointed corona electrode charged with a very high voltage.

- Grammatical error in this sentence: " The charged particles follow the electric fields lines toward to work piece."

To: fields should not be plural - Technical terms could be hyper linked (ie. corona charging. The process of corona charging is explained but the user may not know what corona charging is/why it is needed)

- Grammar edit: "Triboelectric guns charge the powder particles using friction between the walls of the gun and feed tube and the powder."

To: Triboelectric guns charge the powder particles using the friction between the walls of the gun, the feed tube and the powder.

- Grammar edit: "The charge on a particle depends on the number of times it makes contact with the wall and the force which it hits the wall."

To: The charge of a particle depends on the number of times that is makes contact with the wall and the force with which it hits the wall.

- What is Polytetrafluoroethylene and why is it used? (hyper link?)

- A picture(s) in this area would be useful

Deposition

- Maybe use a comparison chart to view the advantages and disadvantages of corona deposition vs. triboelectric deposition?

- Diagrams of corona deposition and triboelectric deposition would be helpful

- Grammar Edit: "Since triboelectric deposition does not have an electric field or excess free ions you can achieve a thicker and more uniform coating compared to a corona gun."

Edit: Personal pronouns such as "you" should probably be avoided.

- Sentence Edit: "The most commonly used methods of curing the adhered powder coating are convection, ultraviolet, and infrared."

Edit: Maybe include the term "radiation" after ultraviolet and infrared.

- Why was convection heating the most popular curing method for metallic work pieces (time, energy?)

Resins

- Maybe use a table of possible/common resins besides just thermosetting polymers and thermoplastic polymers.

- Why are thermosetting polymers so popular?

- Energy considerations with respect to thermosetting vs thermoplastic polymers? Maybe even alternatives to these?

- Sentence edit: "The final solid film on the work piece when cooled is a tough, heat resistant layer."

Edit: When cooled, the solid film on the work piece forms a tough, heat resistant layer.

General Comments

The page gives a good introduction to the process, but it could use a little more depth in some areas such as:

- Corona charging and triboelectric charging: Because these are the two of the main processes in your article, perhaps more information could be given to help the reader understand them (maybe an energy comparison between the two, some diagrams etc.)

- At some point, the process should be related back to energy and methods of decreasing energy consumption. Maybe the thermoplastics section could include some type of energy savings? Or, maybe the curing section could include an energy comparison between the various curing methods.

- Figures and diagrams would make key concepts easier to understand.

- Maybe use a few more references?

lots of improvement needed

Do formatting correctly -- particularly refs -- energy / materials efficiency???--Joshua 13:31, 20 November 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
