Swimming pools are a big consumer of water, and also of energy, especially if heated.
Tips
- Use a swimming pool cover, for water conservation, and to reduce heating bills. Evaporation is the largest source of energy loss in swimming pools.
- If you want to keep the pool cooler in a hot climate:
- Consider the placement of the pool when building, to maximize shade.
- Erect a tarpaulin.
- Deciduous trees are ideal for shade in summer and free access for the sun in winter, but also make a lot of work cleaning the leaves out of the pool. Covering the pool when most of the leaves are falling is a partial solution, but this option is only for very tidy, organized personalities who don't have trouble keeping up with the cleaning!
- If you want to keep the pool warmer during winter:
- Use gas or solar pool heater. Solar pool heating systems are relatively cheap and highly efficient. [1]
- Use pool covers
