The manner in which nuts and seeds are stored is important, to prevent them from turning rancid or losing their valuable nutritional content.

In general[edit | edit source]

Both seeds and nuts will go rancid if stored inappropriately or for too long. Do not expose them to warmth or direct light during storage. The warmer the storage, the faster the seeds or nuts will turn rancid.

Storing nuts[edit | edit source]

Nuts are best stored in their shells whenever possible.

Most nuts will keep for up to 6 months if stored in their original shells in a cool place.

Nuts can be frozen to keep them fresh longer.

If nuts are not stored in their shells, keep them in an airtight container, away from direct light.

If chopped, flaked or ground, use within 4 to 6 weeks.

Storing seeds[edit | edit source]

Keep seeds stored in an airtight container away from direct light.
