The Goal

"Our goal is to bring about change for sustainable development by bridging science and policy. We do this by providing integrated analysis that supports decision makers." [1]

The History

The Swedish Government established the SEI in 1989[1] as an independent research institute that was to specialize on sustainable development and environmental policy issues.[2]

Areas of Focus

SEI divides its efforts into four different specialties:

Managing environmental systems

The SEI research and policy work under this theme focus on the best techniques to manage Earth’s land, water, and air in ways that are best for continued food production as well as sustainably. The goal is to protect biodiversity at the same time as protecting food production. Projects include sustainable urbanization in China, rainwater harvesting, and carbon cycling in forests to name just a handful.

Research and projects are divided into six sub-themes:

Reducing climate risk

This theme focuses on the development of effective and equitable strategies to combat not only the effects of climate change but also addressing the issues that will arise as the world continues to transition into a low carbon future. The analysis focuses on governance, economics, vulnerability, and equity. Specific topics and projects include improving energy access, climate impact equity, and adapting to the loss of glaciers among many others.

Research and projects are divided into four sub-themes:

  • Adaptation and vulnerability
  • Climate policy and governance
  • Climate finance and carbon markets
  • Climate mitigation and bioenergy

Transforming governance

This theme is all about assisting in creating atmospheres within governments, institutions, and social structures to allow for open dialogue in environmental policy making. This is done primarily through the strengthening and empowerment of grassroots, community based institutions. The belief is that all levels of society need to be involved in policy making.

Research and projects are divided into three sub-themes:

  • Vulnerability approach to livelihood development
  • Strategic assessments for transformation
  • Avoiding socio-ecological traps

Rethinking development

This theme is focused on alternative ways to approach the continued development of our planet. This research looks at ways to responsibly and sustainably develop so that more people can benefit from our global community without further destruction of the environment. The creation of new assessment tools and new types of partnerships will assist in sustainable development.

Locations

The SEI has expanded since its creation and now includes research facilities divided into seven regions:

  • Stockholm, Sweden
  • York, United Kingdom
  • Oxford, United Kingdom
  • Tallinn, Estonia
  • United States (Offices in Massachusetts, California, and Seattle)
  • Bangkok, Thailand
  • Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
