Industrial ecology and non-industrial contexts

Industrial ecology and industrial symbiosis refer to a philosophy of integrated design where there is no waste, but every material and energy exchange. However, the term "industrial" seems to exclude key examples of this philosophy, such as composting toilets, home biogas systems and permaculture gardens.
