# This OSAT design is an economical alternative for a cam cleat. Basic cam cleat designs are utilized for many functions. They are typically used as a quick release and locking mechanism for ropes and chords. These devices are usually found on sailing vessels as a method organize and hold lines. Additionally, with few modifications of this design, one being a pulley, a mechanical ascender should be able to be printed.

Having the option to 3D print a cam cleat at sea is attractive as it can save frustration in the event of a failure. During light to medium wind conditions, a 3D printed cam cleat should be sufficient until a replacement can be obtained.

Abstract

  1. ) This OSAT design is an economical alternative for a cam cleat.
  1. ) Cam cleats typically use leaf springs to provide their action, however, this is a prototype using rubber bands. The loads for this prototype need not be large to confirm how the rest of the design responds to an action.
  1. ) Having the option to 3D print a cam cleat at sea is attractive as it can save frustration in the event of a failure. During light to medium wind conditions, a 3D printed cam cleat should be sufficient until a replacement can be obtained.

Bill of Materials

  1. Provide a full BOM -- Materials needed for fabrication of device and alternative materials if they are not available, prices/sources of non-printable parts
    1. Upload and link to all source files from open source CAD
    2. Upload and link to all STLs

Tools needed for fabrication of the OSAT

  1. MOST Delta RepRap or similar RepRap 3-D printer

Skills and Knowledge Necessary to Make the OSAT

  • If you used special skill – link to relevant wikipedia or wikiversity articles/courses

Technical Specifications and Assembly Instructions

  1. Provide directions for print/assembly - be detailed enough in your “how to” to ensure that someone could construct the device from your description. Consider the elegance of IKEA like instructions.
  2. Include print time estimate
  3. Include assembly time estimate
  4. Including drawings or pictures of the device at stage of assembly at minimum. (http://www.appropedia.org/Special:Upload)
  5. Consider video if appropriate

Common Problems and Solutions

  • Include common mistakes/problems to avoid in building your OSAT and how to overcome them

Cost savings

  • If your solution is not a low cost one then it is not really appropriate.
  1. Estimate your costs
  2. Find a commercial equivalent
  3. Calculate $ savings and % savings
