  • Insulate (including floors over unheated spaces
  • Insulate hot water pipes; insulate water-heating unit
  • Add storm windows and doors (consider using plastic)
  • Install insulated shades, panels, or draperies on all windows
  • Ventilate attic and crawl space
  • Conduct general repairs to reduce air infiltration
  • Install clock thermostat on furnace
  • Tune-up furnace and water heater annually
  • Set water-heater thermostat at 120 F
  • Insulate furnace ducts and heat supply lines
  • Replace shower heads with water-saving type
  • Build a vestibule around exterior doors
  • Replace incandescent lighting with fluorescent lights
