In an effort to meet the demand created by COVID-19 outbreak for face shields, masks and open source ventilators, the J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library and the Michigan Tech Open Sustainability Technology Lab have started 3D printing face shields, reusable masks, and ventilator tube splitters based on open source materials. Support this work on Superior Ideas.

Face shields

A frame with ability to hold a transparent semi-rigid sheet is printed using Lulzbot Taz6 printers with PLA and PETG fused filaments and then the transparent sheet is punched and glued to the frame making it a complete face shield covering the entire face of the person from forehead to under chin and is also curved to cover the sides.

Shield.jpg

We recently modified the design to increase the distance between the user's face and the shield to better allow for safety glasses and N95 or surgical mask. We leaned towards this design due to the one size fit, comfort, and simplicity of print. We are able to nest 2 on a bed and it takes ~ 1 hour with the 1.2mm or closer to 2 hours with the .5mm nozzle. Each halo is roughly 22 grams. Here are the latest versions of the design.

design overview

Below is a hole punch or drill out template that can be used for either of the current Swedish designs.

Below is a Lulzbot Taz6 printing the swedish design face shields with multiple shields stacked up with a grid type support layer between each face shield. This approach could potentially reduce the need of being around the printer while we print multiple numbers of shield a day. An stl file of this could be found here File:10 stack swedish modified.stl. While printing this stl file be sure to generate support everywhere using your slicer application and then generate your gcode to start printing.

The transparent semi-rigid plastic sheet 0.3mm thick has dimensions of 8.5in x 11in which is good enough to completely shield most face sizes. This sheet is punched with holes and then mounted and glued to the frame which completes the assembly of our shield. UofM went pre-approved [1]

Masks

  • Mask designs based on COVID-19 MASK (Easy-to-print, no support, filter required)-Cults 3D, or from Thingiverse
    • Filter is square material inserted in cavity, held by front panel.
    • Very hard to ensure that air goes through the filter, not around it. Need filter material larger than open square.
    • Front panel and internal grill fit is sketchy. It's easy for them to be a bad fit. Can be made easier by printing grill 1% less scale than rest of mask.
    • The COVID-19 MASK (Easy-to-print, no support, filter required) from Cults3d printed it on a standard TAZ6 with standard settings and a Creality Ender 3 in PLA 1mm outer 10% infill and made a gasket for the rim from a close-celled foam from the old enable-hand designs. It works well just with friction fit so I don't think it even needs to be glued in. This will make the entire thing easier to disassemble and clean. The mask fits adult males well...maybe cut it down 10-15% for women and younger people.

  • Face mask reviews - covers other designs and filter materials
  • Mason Stone scaled the filter grid from the "Billings Clinic" and posted it Billings" Filter for COVID-19 MASK
  • This now fits the "COVID-19 MASK" design and I think this is a preferable method for using a self-sourced filter as it provides a good solid fit for the filter.

Ventilator Splitters

As there are not enough ventilators in some regions it is possible to split a ventilator between two or four patients although you loose some functionality it does care for more people.
