Pandemic restart[edit | edit source]

  • Please read the MTU Flex return to campus plan. Only request access if your work cannot be done from home.
  • Please read the policies listed here. This page is being continuously updated, so please check back periodically.
  • Before you are given access to the MOST labs you must email Dr. Pearce stating you have read this page.
  • You must complete the training for "manufacturing like" spaces.
  • You must complete the training for research spaces].
  • Every day that you enter the lab, you must complete the Daily symptom monitoring form by logging in to your MTU Flex Portal account. Please do not email to Dr. Pearce anymore. There is an FAQ section on the same page that should answer your questions regarding privacy of data etc.
  • Complete the 20-minute online return-to-work SafetySkills training mandated by the state. You will receive a follow-up email with your login credentials. Successful completion must be submitted no later than June 4, 2020.

Self screening[edit | edit source]

  • Self temperature must be taken every morning and must be below 99.5 degrees F. Please maintain a personal record.
  • Do not enter the lab if you are feeling sick in any way or have a fever.

Laboratory personnel[edit | edit source]

  • At any given time, the number of people allowed in lab spaces is restricted to:
  1. 419: 2
  2. 517: 10
  3. 518: 2

This is based on 1 person/200 sq ft. Please coordinate with other researchers using the same space to ensure compliance to this rule. The MOST email list is a good resource for this.

M&M building entry/exit log[edit | edit source]

  • Please fill this log every time you enter/exit the building.

Sanitizing surfaces[edit | edit source]

  • To disinfect surfaces and doorknobs use any of the following:
  1. 95% ethanol with a 30 seconds contact time. (note a flammable liquid)
  2. 70% ethanol with a 10 minutes contact time (note a flammable liquid)
  3. 70% isopropanol with a 30 second contact time (note a flammable liquid)
  4. 2 - 10% bleach solution with a 1 minute contact time (note an eye and skin corrosive)
  5. COVID cleaning products sold at University Chemical Stores
  6. Other products on the EPA list of approved COVID-19 disinfectants.

Contact Nupur if you are running out of disinfectant. Please contact her well before you actually run out.

  • Please fill the cleaning/sanitizing log for 517/518. Everything needs to be disinfected in the beginning and at the end of the workday, in addition to during the day, as necessary.

MOST Lab Social Distancing Rules and PPE[edit | edit source]

  • Email the MOST list to let people know when you are going to be in the lab so we we will minimize dual use, maximize printer up time, and minimize trips.
  • Only 1 person picks up supplies for receiving/day and distributes them via entryway Gigabot.
  • Sanitize your hands with the hand sanitizer as you enter and leave the lab.
  • Assume every surface in the lab is contaminated.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Use your own eye protection.
  • Sanitize anything you are worried about with sanitation wipes.
  • Stay a minimum of 6 feet from everyone in the lab at all times.
  • Wear a mask
  • Follow all normal safety protocols prior to pandemic
  • While the pandemic continues complete all tasks you can do at home at home (e.g. writing, reading articles, doing lit reviews) to enable minimal time in the lab collecting data on experimental equipment.
  • Prop the door open while you work in the lab to avoid touching the doorknob multiple times.
  • Avoid wearing gloves as a general practice. Only wear gloves if your work requires it. Immediately dispose off of them in a safe manner.
  • No food is allowed in the lab. Please step out for meals and snacks.

Research involving the "Buddy rule"[edit | edit source]

  • If you're doing hazardous research that requires an SOP, you will need to set up a "check-in/check-out" policy with a fellow researcher. This can include an additional researcher (who is trained and has access) to be within "hearing distance". If this is not possible, real time monitoring via Zoom is an option for you.

Masks[edit | edit source]

Under Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s extended “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order, all persons are required to wear face coverings when entering enclosed public spaces, including campus buildings and workspaces, where social distancing cannot be maintained.

Michigan Tech strongly encourages employees to provide their own personal face coverings in alignment with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance:

  • Fabric face masks should be made of new, tight-weave cotton fabric (e.g., quilting cotton, denim, duck cloth, canvas, or twill).
  • Employees must wear their face mask at all times indoors when social distancing cannot be maintained.
  • Face masks should be worn over the mouth and nose and should not be worn dangling around the neck or on the chin or forehead.
  • Employees should not touch or adjust their face mask. If they do, they must immediately wash their hands per CDC guidelines.
  • After removing their face mask, employees must immediately wash their hands per CDC guidelines.
  • Fabric face masks should be laundered in hot water daily.
  • When not in use, fabric face masks should be stored in a clean, closed paper bag or other breathable container.

Fabric face masks are not considered personal protective equipment (PPE) and should not be used when entering a room or area where known or suspected COVID-19 cases are present.

Michigan Tech will supply face coverings for employees who choose not to utilize their own face coverings. Employees who have current job duties on campus who need a face covering may pick one up between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday through Friday at the Transportation Services Window on the first floor of the Administration Building. Please park in Lot 11 and enter through the east doors. Walking traffic will be one way, exiting through the north doors. If you require a face covering but are unable to pick one up during these hours, please contact Brian Cadwell at bjcadwel@mtu.edu.

MOST Lab COVID19 Medical Production[edit | edit source]

  • Follow all rules for ‘MOST Lab Social Distancing Rules’
  • Attempt to maximize production – e.g. start prints first thing when you enter.
  • Sanitize bed clearer & all the main controls for shared 3-D printers with wipes before use.
  • Clear print bed with paint scraper/clearer pushing away from yourself – put finished prints in boxes by type of PPE, etc.
  • Start all non-research active 3-D printers to print COVID-19 donations with available plastics using working gcode on the SD card in the printer.
  • Leave hand written note taped to printer if there is an issue if you are unable to fix it.
  • If email indicates a new medical need – slice, load gcode on SD cards and leave in printer. (Make sure you are using the appropriate machine type when slicing – especially for MOAR struders. Always start MOARs first as you can get multiple runs in per unit time you are in the lab.)
