This OSAT project is a carpenter's hammer. In order to be heavy enough and duable enough to drive nails, a bolt is used for the hammering surface. The resulting product is a very strong hammer that can drive and remove nails. This hammer is an appropriate OSAT because a hammer is one of the most basic and necessary tools to build a structure. A hammer like this would be easy to print, low cost, and fill a real need for a developing area.

  2. 1/18" wrench for bolt installation.

Skills and knowledge needed

  • There is no special skills needed to make this tool.

Technical Specifications and Assembly Instructions

  1. If any changes to the design want to be done, open the SCAD file and adjust the parameters.
  2. Slicing instructions
    1. Fill % = 100 (Less infill could probably be used)
    2. Speed = 50 mm/sec
    3. Layer Height =.15 mm
    4. No support Needed
    5. I recommend using a brim on the print
    6. Print the hammer standing up, hammer head end down
  3. Print time with above settings will be about 15 Hours
  4. Tread bolt into hammer with a wrench after printing.

Common Problems and Solutions

Bolt can be difficult to thread into the hammer, I used a vise to hold the hammer stationary.

Cost savings

  • Filament needed: 235 grams @ $18.39/kg = $4.32
  • Hardware needed: 1 bolt @ $0.91
  • At a total cost of $5.23

Commercial Equivalents

  • Equivalents range from $9.97 ([1]) to $199.97 ([2])
