While inspiring, such a vision is far beyond the scope of this semester's project. Though smaller in scale, our project can still prove to be very important to the individuals who will receive it and a shining example for others to follow....into the future. The airships above are of the type used by the US Navy fleet back in the 1950's. Future next generation cargo airships are planned to be much larger, more aerodynamic, capable of carrying as much aid as a small freighter and yet able to reach even remote villages at speeds approaching 200 mph (174 knots).

Revision as of 09:18, 20 January 2010

This Appropedia Web page is Dedicated to creating an appropriate technology emergency response to the catastrophe in Haiti by HSU students enrolled in engineering 305-Appropriate Technology - spring 2010. Students enrolled in other courses and wishing to receive class credit are also invited to participate. Bart Orlando [1]

A CALL TO ACTION!

There are now estimated to be 1.5 million homeless earthquake refugees in Haiti. Many of their essential needs can be provided for using appropriate technology: shelter, water pasteurization, cooking food, dealing with human waste, lighting, telecommunications, bathing and methods of aid cargo delivery, etc. We shall design and build life sustaining appropriate technology devices and send them to the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti. Engineering 305 students participating in this project are invited to contact Bart Orlando (bart6591@yahoo.com).

CONTRIBUTIONS

Members of the HSU administration, faculty, student body, local community and those around the world who are interested in supporting this project with contributions of materials, hardware, workshop equipment access, work space, storage space, shipping logistics and expert advise are encouraged to participate. Please leave your relevant information at the following link and you will be contacted.[2] email bart6591@yahoo.com

INSPIRING EXAMPLES OF APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY AID POSSIBILITIES

THE RAPID DEPLOYMENT OF RESCUE AIRSHIP ARMADAS

SOLAR POWERED AIRSHIP ARMADAS WOULD NOT REQUIRE REFUELING, SHIPPING PORTS, AIRPORTS OR ROADS! IN HAITI, THE PORT IS IN RUINS, THE ROADS ARE DAMAGED, CLOGGED WITH RUBLE, DEAD BODIES AND REFUGEES. THE AIRPORT CONTROL TOWER HAS BEEN DESTROYED. THE AIRPORT IS TOO SMALL AND ILL EQUIPPED TO LAND AND UNLOAD LARGE MILITARY TRANSPORT PLANES RAPIDLY. THE FIRST RESCUE JET TO ARRIVE FLEW ALL THE WAY FROM CHINA(!) AND TOOK 6 HOURS TO UNLOAD BY HAND. THE US MILITARY ARRIVED, SEIZED CONTROL OF THE AIRPORT, GAVE LANDING PRIORITY TO FLIGHTS CARRYING US WEAPONS AND 4,000 SOLDIERS AND TURNED AWAY MOST INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS CARRYING FOOD, WATER,MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND MOBILE HOSPITALS... FOR AN ENTIRE WEEK! THE BULK OF THE RELIEF SUPPLIES THAT DID REACH THE AIRPORT AT PORT-AU-PRINCE WERE UNLOADED STACKED NEAR THE RUNWAY AND HAD NOT REACHED THE HAITIAN PEOPLE AS OF 1/18/2010. AT LAST, THE ORDER FORBIDDING PARACHUTE DROPS OF AID HAS BEEN RESENDED AND LIMITED AIR DROPS HAVE BEGUN. NO AID HAS REACHED SURROUNDING CITIES. FOR SEVEN DAYS THE SURVIVORS HAVE WAITED. A RAPID DEPLOYMENT RESCUE AIRSHIP FLEET STATIONED IN FLORIDA ALONG WITH PRELOADED AIR DROP CARGO PLANES [41][42] WOULD HAVE TAKEN LESS THAN 4 HOURS TO REACH THEIR DESTINATIONS WITH DOCTORS AND RELIEF SUPPLIES.
