Anal cleansing? OK maybe I'm just too American to understand this but there is no mention of toilet paper here. 24.148.239.228 19:46, 20 September 2007 (PDT)

  • Toilet paper, leaves or water are typically used for cleaning. The composting/drying toilets cope fine with these and leaves or toilet paper adds very little bulk, if urine is separated then wash water is also diverted to speed up drying. KalleP 12:32, 23 October 2012 (PDT)

what people eat affecting the compost?[edit source]

What about what people eat affecting the quality of the compost? I mean if someone eats junk food and takes a lot of medicines that may come out in the waste, does that affect the usefulness of using their waste in composting?

  • I expect there will be some effects from what we eat but most of what we it is water and the fecal matter is mostly water so what is left is mostly roughage, insolubles and undigestables. Most medicines should be at least partially metabolised by the body and be in smaller quantities, organic compounds will decompose and denature naturally, reactive inorganic chemicals will have been complexed into more stable salts when passing through the body. Examining the leachate from a dry composting toilet residue might well be interesting but not likely to be more dangerous than what has to be disposed of in some way at a sewerage plant. http://toxics.usgs.gov/highlights/biosolids.html This link indicates that a number of medications and daily use chemicals do wind up in the sewrage treatment sludge (used as fertiliser) so a similar profile could be expected. South African suppliers[edit source]

There are a few RSA suppliers of composting toilets I have read about, not sure where to add links, they have some interesting products.

http://www.bemoci.co.za/ELoo.htm Looks like this is a promotional company that sells the ECOSAN toilet made by Jo-Jo Tanks http://www.jojotanks.co.za

African Sanitation makes a very compact solar heated unit http://web.archive.org/web/20160111052130/http://0860dryloo.co.za/

A small private venture that could be licensed and replicated easily I expect. http://web.archive.org/web/20140531194814/http://sa-legacy.co.za/index.php/dry-toilet-operation.html

I'm not sure if they need a page of their own each, but perhaps mention somewhere, feel free to move this text out of the talk section if you can think of a better place for it. KalleP 12:32, 23 October 2012 (PDT)
