Description

The majority of the world is currently confined and impacted due to the Covid-19 global pandemic. Countries around the world are feeling an economic backlash, especially at the local level. One of the solutions to this problem will consist of using alternative energy systems and appropriate technology to ensure sustainability and economic independence.

This three-week program is an introductory course that will look into and research how alternative energy and appropriate technology can be used to develop community-based energy independence plans for people who will need it the most during and after the pandemic. This program will be run with support from Appropedia as a source of information to explore current energy needs around the world and to document a plan to generate short-term impact in communities with long-term sustainable and regenerative visionary goals.

Program Goals

By the end of this course, students participating in this course will be able to:

  • Research alternative energy and appropriate technology applications
  • Design a low-cost strategy for implementing alternative energies in low-income communities
  • Document strategies with examples from Appropedia, as well as other resources
  • Be able to use entrepreneurial thinking to support alternative energy and appropriate technologies in reaching local, regional, and global markets sustainably

Grading

  • Daily Attendance/Participation (9 course meetings): 35%
  • Week 1: Focus Proposal 10%
  • Week 2: Canvas and Literature Review 20%
  • Week 3: Final Presentation 35%
