Abstract

Calipers are a useful tool because they provide a bit more accuracy than a standard ruler. This design is 3D printable, and can be modified.

Bill of Materials

  1. PLA
  2. Superglue

Tools needed for fabrication of the OSAT

  1. MOST Delta RepRap or similar RepRap 3-D printer

Skills and Knowledge Necessary to Make the OSAT

  • Knowledge of how use openSCAD to modify the length of the caliper

Technical Specifications and Assembly Instructions

  1. Print the ruler model either flat on its back or on its side opposite of the increment marks.
  2. Print the caliper pieces on either of their sides
  3. Print both left and right caliper pieces and end cap together to prevent warping.
  4. Glue left caliper to the left end of the ruler
  5. Insert right caliper
  6. Glue end cap to the right end of the ruler to prevent right caliper from falling off.
  7. 20 minute print time
  8. 1 minute assembly time
  9. Including drawings or pictures of the device at stage of assembly at minimum. (http://www.appropedia.org/Special:Upload)

Common Problems and Solutions

  • when ruler is printed on its back it becomes slightly warped, however this does not effect the functionality of the caliper. Printing the ruler on its side solves this problem.

Cost savings

  • If your solution is not a low cost one then it is not really appropriate.
  1. Estimate your costs
  2. Find a commercial equivalent
  3. Calculate $ savings and % savings

References

  • The sources of information (e.g. engineering handbooks, journal articles, government documents, webpages, books, magazine articles etc.). References should use the <ref> </ref> and <references/> tags and can be in any format but should include all the information necessary for someone else to find the same information you did. For example: [1]

Based on the developmental needs addressed (e.g. food, heat, electricity, clean water, health care, etc.) be sure to label your device in the proper categories e.g. use [[Category:Water]]. Be sure to categorize your device so that it will be easy to find – for example “Low voltage connection basics” is categorized in [[Category:How tos]] [[Category:Electricity]] [[Category:Electric lighting]].
