Bag Gardens also called Sack Gardens are a form of container gardening where the growth medium ( soil ) is contained in a plastic or canvas bag or sack. Bag gardens allow to grow plants where there is unsuitable ground. There are basically two forms of this gardens.

  • Horizontal The bag containing the soil is shaped as a flat pad on the ground. The thickness of the pad depends on the plant that should be grown. Plants with shallow roots need less thickness than other plants. The seeds or seedlings are put in triangular cuts in the upper surface of the bag. One of the cuts in the center of the bag should be left empty to allow more convenient watering.
  • Vertical The bag containing the soil stands vertical on the ground. For the better distribution of the the irrigation water a vertical channel should be build in the center of the bag. This can be build with stones and a sliding framework during the filling of the bag. Another possibility is a bundle of small twigs or straw in the center of the bag. The seeds or seedlings are put in triangular cuts in the circumferential surface of the bag and on top of the bag. Some stakes rammed in the ground should be used to prevent toppling of the bag. This stakes can be either around the bag or inside the bag and rammed through the bottom of the bag.
