Use categories and templates as the way to create the list[edit source]

Instead of maintaining a list, I think it may be better to create a series of categories for different types of volunteers. Such volunteers would then add a template to their user page. That template should categorize the user, and have a link labeled something like "click here to contact me about volunteering in support of a course-based translation project". Details about what the volunteers do should be on the category page, rather than in this article. CurtB 01:27, 8 April 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"Volunteers" seems like the wrong word[edit source]

The Appropedia community is itself a collection of volunteers, so the label seems wrong. What these lists (or categories) are intended to identify are users willing to help in specific ways. Are these therefore "Users willing to help in specific ways" or "Users offering to help"

I like the idea of finding more inclusive ways of expressing this - when people help out for 5 minutes or 2 hours, oftentimes they wouldn't consider themselves a "volunteer". --Chriswaterguy 01:12, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Appropedia-specific?[edit source]

I'm a little unclear if this page is just about volunteering projects related to Appropedia itself. I'm guessing so (it's in the "Appropedia:" namespace) but this could also be applied more widely, on a separate page perhaps. --Chriswaterguy 01:14, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The change of approach (see below) might make this question less applicable... Or perhaps it still applies? CurtB 14:25, 13 April 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Change of approach[edit source]

The "list of volunteers" concept has been morphed to follow a pre-existing approach. Appropedia already had "porting helpers" who were identified by that category. Helpers seems like a better word than volunteers, since both the helpers and the helped are volunteers. Categories seems a better way of tagging.
