wikEd is an editing tool that works in Firefox (and other Mozilla browsers). It can be added to the individual user's account, to give:

  • a range of extra editing options and shortcuts.
  • a way to easily convert formatted text to MediaWiki markup (by clicking the wikify button ([w]).

WikEd instructions are found at Wikipedia:User:Cacycle/wikEd.

Note: In Appropedia, wikEd does not work with the standard editing tool (UniWiki). You must click the "Classic" button at the top right to access WikEd.

How to install

An example is found at: http://www.appropedia.org/index.php?title=User:Chriswaterguy/monobook.js&oldid=33334

You can copy the text in that page to your own monobook.js page, do a hard refresh to clear your browser's cache (e.g. ctrl+F5?) and you should have the new editing tools above the edit box.

More complete instructions are found at Wikipedia:User:Cacycle/wikEd installation.

Using wikEd to port pages

You can use wikEd to port pages and keep their format. This works for Word documents and HTML pages, and probably many other standard formats. However, it does not yet work for porting PDF files (we're working on this).

To port content using wikEd:

  • Save and Upload the images to Appropedia. Use suitable names (specific and descriptive) for the images.
  • Select the entire PDF document (ctrl+a)
  • Copy (ctrl+c)
  • Go to the edit box on Appropedia and paste (ctrl+v).
  • Click the wikify ([w]) button.
  • Preview and fix problems as you are able to. Change the image names to the ones used when uploading. (If there are lot of changes to make, save your work to avoid losing it e.g. in a browser crash).
  • Save.
