These guidelines are adapted from [[Wikipedia:WP:SR|Wikipedia's Ruleset]] to Appropedia's goal of being a living library serving as encyclopedia, textbook, how-to manual and project repository. The main difference between these Guidelines and the Rules below is that straying from these guidelines is not always considered inappropriate.

# '''[[BE BOLD!|Be bold!]]''' in updating pages. Go ahead, it's a wiki{{w|wiki}}! <br />Encourage others, including those who disagree with you, likewise to '''be bold!'''

# '''[[Appropedia:Neutral point of view|Neutral point of view (NPOV)]]'''. Appropedia is supportive of [[appropriate technology]] and [[sustainable development]], and we recognize articles will usually be written from a point of view that is sympathetic to these concepts. We encourage you to follow our [[Help:Types of content|content and format suggestions]] to know how to best express your personal point of view. Appropedia encourages the application of a NPOV depending on the type of content. For example:
# '''Ignore all guidelines!'''.{{w|Project:Ignore all rules}} Don't worry! If you just want to add some useful information to an article in a commonsense way, do so. On the other hand, if someone shows you that there is an established and sensible way to do something, please ignore this rule and listen to that person.
## [[:Category:How tos|"How to"]] pages, for example, are usually easy to write from a NPOV by contributing information about different ways to do something.
# (But) '''When in doubt, take it to the [[Wikipedia:Talk_page|talk page]]'''. We have all the time in the world. [[Wikipedia:Assume_good_faith|Mutual respect]] is the guiding behavioral principle of Appropedia and, although everyone knows that their writing may be edited mercilessly, it is easier to accept changes if the reasons for them are understood. If you discuss changes on the article's ''talk'' (or ''discussion'') page before you make them, you should reach consensus faster and happier.
## [[:Category:Projects|Project]] pages are usually written from a NPOV, but may have sections where the opinions of the creators are stated.
# '''[[Appropedia:Edit_summaries|Decent edit summaries]]''' and clear and transparent explanations are universally appreciated. Other editors need to understand your process, and it also helps you yourself to understand what you did after a long leave of absence from an article. Please state '''''what''''' you changed and '''''why'''''. If the explanation is too long, elucidate on the discussion page.  It is a current policy of Appropedia that anyone may edit articles without registering, so there may be a lot of changes to watch; edit summaries simplify this.
#'''[[Wikipedia:wikipedia:Assume_good_faith|Assume good faith]]'''; in other words, try to consider the person on the other end of the discussion is a thinking, rational being who is trying to positively contribute to Appropedia — unless, and only unless, you have firm, solid, and objective proof to the contrary. Merely disagreeing with you is no such proof.
#Particularly, '''avoid reverting good faith edits'''. Reverting is a little ''too'' powerful sometimes, hence the [[Wikipedia:wikipedia:Three-revert rule|three-revert rule]]. Resist the temptation, unless you're reverting very obvious vandalism <small>(like "LALALALAL*&*@#@THIS_SUXX0RZ", or someone changing "6+5*2=16" to  "6+5*2='''17'''")</small> or very clearly wrong information. If you really can't stand something, revert once, with a edit summary politely explaining why. Perhaps something like "(rv) I disagree strongly, I'll explain why in the Talk page."  and immediately take it to the Talk page.
# '''Be gracious''': ''Be liberal in what you accept, be conservative in what you do''. Try to accommodate other people's quirks as best you can, but try to be as polite, solid and straightforward as possible yourself.

==Strict Rules==
These rules are adapted from [[Wikipedia:WP:SR|Wikipedia's Ruleset]].  While most of Wikipedia's ruleset has been loosened to become Guidelines, due to the non-encyclopedic nature of Appropedia, some rules must be remain strict rules. # '''[[Wikipedia:No_personal_attacks|No personal attacks]]'''. Don't write that user such and so is an idiot, or insult him/her (even if (s)he ''is'' an idiot). Instead, explain what they did wrong, why it is wrong, and how to fix it. If possible, fix it yourself (but see above).

Appropedia often references [[Wikipedia:Main Page|Wikipedia]]'s [[Wikipedia:wikipedia:Five pillars|Five Pillars]] and [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Simplified_Ruleset|Simplified Ruleset]].  This makes sense, of course, since Wikipedia has "been there and done that" with respect to wikidom.  However, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and Appropedia is not.  Since Appropedia is not Wikipedia, they differ in their policies.  You can investigate in more detail by comparing this page to Wikipedia's [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Simplified_Ruleset|Simplified Ruleset]].  The key differences between Appropedia and Wikipedia are with respect to:

*Neutral Point of View (NPOV); Appropedia is flexible with respect to NPOV, and expects content to be sympathetic to the ideas of [[Appropriate Technology]] and [[Sustainable Development]] (Essentially, Appropedia acknowledges that it supports an agenda to promote sustainability).
{{Excerpt|Appropedia:Original content|references=no}}
*Original content: Appropedia is open original content, although it requires recognition and approval of the author, in part to comply with the licenses of content on the site (such as GNU FDL or Creative Commons), but also to support discussion and collaborations.
*Verifiability; Wikipedia requires verifiability for all of its content, but since Appropedia allows original research, we must be flexible about  how we enforce this policy. Verifiability desirable and encouraged, but sometimes not required. Where information has not been verified, this should be noted.

==Encyclopedic content==
== What Appropedia is not ==
{{Main|Appropedia is different from Wikipedia}}
Content which is verifiable and about which there is relatively little dispute can be considered "encyclopedic", and as such should be placed in a Wikipedia article.  Significant amounts of encyclopedic content should not be included in Appropedia articles, and instead should be referenced at the appropriate page in Wikipedia (which should be created if it does not already exist).  However, it is quite acceptable to include small amounts (2 or 3 sentences) of encyclopedic content if it adds to the readability of an Appropedia article.

Often in such cases it will still be appropriate to reference relevant articles on Wikipedia:

* For inline links,use {{tl|wp sup}} (superscript link), e.g. to link a Wikipedia article about a book, <nowiki>{{w|Book Title}}</nowiki> creates: {{w|Book Title}}
** {{Tl|w}} is the newer, shorter name for the same template.
* Use an == Interwiki links == section, after == See also ==. E.g. [[Wikipedia:Water]] links to the Wikipedia article on water.

Appropedia operates less by imposing strict rules, and more by encouraging voluntary guidelines which you can choose to follow. We believe that only a couple of strict rules are necessary, relating to how we treat others, and how we use the work of others.

You might see people doing things that are plainly not in accordance with these guidelines. Keep in mind that they may or may not still be well within the actual Appropedia policies and guidelines, and therefore, we encourage you to apply the be gracious guideline in those situations.

Code of conduct[edit | edit source]

To ensure a positive and respectful community, we have some rules in place that are adapted from Wikipedia's Ruleset. While Wikipedia has transitioned most of its rules into guidelines, we have decided to maintain some strict rules due to the unique non-encyclopedic nature of Appropedia. Let's look at these rules and understand why they are important.

  1. No personal attacks. We believe in maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment. So, please refrain from making personal attacks on other users. Even if you strongly disagree or find someone's actions frustrating, expressing your concerns constructively is essential. Instead of resorting to insults or derogatory language, explain what went wrong, why it's incorrect, and provide guidance on rectifying the situation. If possible, you can even take the initiative to fix the issue yourself, but remember to refer to the guidelines above.
  2. Respect intellectual property. Appropedia promotes content sharing under a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike license. It's crucial to respect the copyrights of others and ensure that your contributions and usage of the content on Appropedia align with the licenses of the works already present on the platform. This includes text, images, and any other forms of content. So, before adding or using content, make sure it is compatible with the licenses in place. By doing so, we foster a culture of collaboration and uphold the principles of fair use.
  3. Be civil at all times; let's strive to treat fellow users with kindness and respect. While debates may sometimes become intense or passionate, it's important to remember that there's a person behind every username. Even if you believe someone is mistaken, maintain a civil and courteous attitude. We value healthy discussions and encourage you to focus on shared ideas rather than attacking individuals. By embracing this principle, we create an environment conducive to collaboration and mutual understanding.
  4. Be cooperative and helpful. Collaboration and helpfulness are the cornerstones of the Appropedia community. We strive for high cooperation, supporting one another in our shared mission. While this principle is expected in the world of wikis, it holds even greater significance here.

Content creation[edit | edit source]

  1. Rigor. Our aim is to be factual, so evidence, analysis and science are encouraged. Evidence may include in-the-field experience, backed up by the agreement of other editors, but can also include the results of research and analysis.
  2. Neutral point of view (NPOV). Appropedia is supportive of appropriate technology and sustainable development, and we recognize articles will usually be written from a point of view that is sympathetic to these concepts. We encourage you to follow our content and format suggestions to know how to best express your personal point of view. Appropedia encourages the application of a NPOV depending on the type of content. For example:
    1. "How to" pages, for example, are usually easy to write from a NPOV by contributing information about different ways to do something.
    2. Project pages are usually written from a NPOV, but may have sections where the opinions of the creators are stated.
    3. Organization pages can benefit from having a NPOV to inform others and let them make their own decisions.
    4. Particularly, User pages are reasonable places to express opinions from a personal perspective.
  3. Follow Naming conventions. In short:
    • Don't use capital letters, except for the very first letter (and that's automatic, anyway); except for proper names (people, places, organizations).
    • For a project, use a specific name, e.g. Jodie Doe's water filter, not just Water filter.

Appropedia allows, welcomes and already hosts great amounts of original research. This is one of the main differences between Appropedia and Wikipedia.

While scientific rigor is encouraged, readers are advised that articles are generally not peer reviewed. However, Appropedia has been shown to be a useful platform for open source research in sustainability.

Some (but not all) types of original content on Appropedia are:

Appropedia also allows and welcomes content that is not original research. Some (but not all) types of content that do not constitute original research are:

What Appropedia is not[edit | edit source]

Appropedia is a wiki to document personal and organizational experiences and ideas to solve planetary issues. This page outlines some key aspects of what Appropedia does in this regard, and how we differ from other platforms.
