Note: for the MOU specifically for the Open Sustainability Network, please see OSN MOU.

A Memorandum of Understanding can be pursued with any like-minded organization that we want to work with. Good examples to start with are:

  • Practical Action
  • OLPC (SJ asked to be sent the draft)
    • working together on creating content for the XO aka Children's Machine.
    • working together on copyright release of content which is locked up due to unclear copyright status.
    • Appropedia curates content
    • OLPC focuses on distribution and localization.
  • EWB-Aust

Protocol

After a signed MOU has been obtained then insert {{OSN Member}} on the Organization page for the group in Appropedia. This will tag them as an organization while also adding them to the list of OSN Members If one has not been created already - create it - being sure to i) include the organization in all the appropriate categories and ii) do a search and hyperlink for all mentions of the organization already in Appropedia.

Draft

Guidelines: (Online guide? A very basic one is How To Write an Memorandum of Understanding | eHow.com.)

Would we use MOUs to build up the supporting member groups of OSN? (Curt) Seems reasonable... If yes, then perhaps need a specifically worded MOU (defining what the support entails). add:

  • Village Earth
  • FullBellyProject
  • SolarCooking.Wikia
  • Akvo
  • Arch for Hum / OAN
  • etc

Separate MOUs?

Separate MOUs are needed - for Appropedia (specific, tailored) as well as for OSN (more standard)?

Draft for OSN

Appropedia and XXX agree to jointly support the Open Sustainability Network (OSN). OSN is a group of like-minded groups and individuals that support and, as much as practical, adhere to the principle of open sharing of information in the area of sustainability. (Define "openness"? Define "sustainability"?) Both parties agree that this MOU can be terminated by either party upon written notice.

Supporting OSN entails the following commitments:

Required

  • Desire to support and adhering to openness in sustainability
  • Agreement to openly acknowledge support of OSN
  • Agreement allow the use of corporate name and logo when listing supporting partners

Strongly Desired (but not strictly required)

  • Posting OSN link and logo where appropriate on own web site
  • Participating in joint press releases about OSN
  • Promoting OSN (the concept and various events) occasionally via mention in blogs and newsletters
  • Participation in occasional conferences and events focused on overcoming obstacles to openness in the realm of sustainability
  • Assistance in managing the affairs of OSN
  • Development or approval of OSN guiding principles
  • Identifying a primary contact person regarding OSN

Optional

  • Leading the coordination of occasional OSN events
  • Financial support for OSN

NOTE: the first official OSN event is scheduled for October 18, 2008 in San Francisco.
