The RepRap motto is "wealth without money" - for this assignment you are to create wealth by making an open source design that has value to you. It must be 3D printable on your MOST Delta and cost less than a commercial equivalent (if such a thing exists).

Assignment

  1. Design something of "high value" that you can 3D print on your MOST Delta
  2. Make sure someone else has not already done it - search http://www.yeggi.com/ and https://www.yobi3d.com
  3. Design 3D printable components with ONLY OS CAD packages (e.g. OpenSCAD, FreeCAD, or Blender)
  4. Upload your design under an OS license to https://www.myminifactory.com/ or https://libre3d.com/ - include: Source files, STLs, a picture, and a brief description including costs and $ savings.
  5. Add picture, link to your MyMiniFactory or Libre3D page with name, commercial equivalent link+cost, and economic savings to table below (see example).
  6. Print component and bring to class (online students - post a link to a short Youtube video)

Grading

  • 30% Print quality
  • 20% Documentation
  • 50% Design (design for printing, aesthetics and function)

ParametricSprue.jpg Parametric Sprue $15 10mm Sprue Form This parometric sprue allows for users to print a sprue in usage with match plate casting. ATB Camera.jpg Dual Flash Camera Mount $135.99 Camera Flash Mount This flash mount allows the user to mount two DSLR camera flashes to the 1/4-20 thread screws found on most cameras. Kjkurtz bigmoney reel.PNG Centre Pin Reel with Ceramic Bearings $199.99 Reel This part only costs $1.80 to print at 30% infill and $3.50 for the bearing. Would not trust the reel for steelhead, but would work for smaller trout. Approximate savings if it were strong enough would be 97%
CoffeeGrinder.jpg Coffee Grinder Conversion Kit [2], $139 Amazon Best Selling Electric Burr Coffee Grinder Any planetary motor (the best being 100 RPM) with power supply will work. The printed components only takes 76g of filament to print. My cost of filament was $1.52, so $137.50 savings (99%). IMG 8472 v2.jpg Nordic ski binding jig (self-clamping) [14], Not sold commercially, but you can find one used for $45-60 if you're lucky. Expect the print to cost $2.00 at 20% infill. That gives a cost savings of 96% over buying an old used jig, and you save the time of hunting it down on random buy/sell pages.

Using a jig to mount your bindings is extremely helpful for proper hole placement. Without the use of a jig, it takes much longer to correctly place the mounting holes. The jig sets perfect alignment every time and greatly speeds up the process. There is currently one OS binding jig, and it does not have a clamping mechanism and does not align itself to the ski. See here. The new design both clamps and aligns. To properly use, print the base plate (two separate pieces that connect) then print two clamps and connect them to the base plate's extruded tabs. See the myminifactory link for more details.

Prototype caliper.jpg Prototype Caliper Since this is a custom design made by our team there are no commercial equivalents. Though material would cost around $118 plus machine time and tooling would price this probably around $250+ This design costs about $0.29 for the brace, $0.50 for the main body, and $0.19 for the pistons. So using that the whole caliper plus some bolts puts the total cost of the prototype at about $1.50. Resulting in a $248.50 savings (99.4%) per iteration. Project Video

Tlfedor monogrammed holder.jpg Monogram Jewelry Holder [24], ~$149 for something 3x the size, or roughly $50 for something of a similar size Pottery Barn sells a similar product 3x the size for $149. FlashMount.JPG Flash Holder Mount for Softbox [28], Commercial Equivalent to my design. However my current softbox can not support this adapter, so i would need to buy a whole new set to use a flash. [29], Commercial version of softbox flash set approx $170. This design allows me to use my current flash with my softboxes eliminating the need to buy a new set, found here [30]. My current solution is to have another tripod with the flash pointing into the soft box. This design allows the flash and the softbox to be mounted on the same tripod, allowing me to set up more softboxes, and reduces the footprint they take up.

(Equivalent (regular price) $50.00/set containing six mallets and balls). For rod, use an old broomstick and cut into ~24 inch sections. Could be modified to use less plastic by optimizing infill parameters and their effects on mechanical properties. Pleco Cave Expandable.PNG Adjustable Pleco Cave Pleco caves can be anywhere from $5 to $20+ Plecos are extemely picky about cave size, and most require caves fitted to their bodies for the purposes of being able to mate correctly. Having a one size fits all type solution helps with this. Cost to print is ten cents or less, as the printed objects are extremely thin/lightweight. This means that you are saving on nearly the entire cost of whatever you would normally spend on a commercial cave. Savings are 98-99% and the printed product offers more options to the user.
