The Arbol Misión Socialista is an environmentally conscious project in Venezuela aimed at restoring interest in the environment among civilians, promoting ecological equilibrium and restoring damaged green areas.

It was launched by deceased president Hugo Chavez in Venezuela on June 4, 2006. The idea emerged from the concept of ecosocialism, the political doctrine that focuses on protecting the environment from exploitation caused by capitalism. The Arbol Misión Socialista is considered part of the bolivarian revolution in progress started by Chavez’s regime.

Arbol Misión Socialista derives from an initiative to replant trees in deforested areas that were damaged from illegal logging. President Chavez made the project official on his television show “Aló Presidente” by planting a nogal de Caracas (black walnut) tree.

The project not only looks to protect the environment, but also to find ways to use its resources in a conscious manner and without harm.

Goals

The second phase of the Arbol Misión Socialista project has many strategic objectives for the 2013-2019 period:

-Plant an approximate of 20 million trees around the country. -Promote sustainable use of forests -Increase the green areas through reforestation -Conserve biodiversity -Guarantee the protection of water resources -Promote the agroforestry systems -Incite ethical environmental values

Throughout this reconstructive period, 5,000 conversationist committees will participate in the 4 stage plan: seed gathering, plant production, cultivation, and maintenance and monitoring for 4 years.

Species recovery

The project seeks to conserve rare species of plants in the venezuelan ecosystem. Some of the autochthonous plant and tree species in danger are essential to the diet of animals in mountainous terrain and inhabited and unintervened lands in general where help has not reached out to in the past.

Achievements

The Arbol Misión Socialista has achieved its goals with the help of rural communities and volunteers. For the seed collection stage in 2006, 10,900 venezuelans gathered across the country. In 2008 it was announced that 101.6 kilos of seeds were collected. The number has gone up to 157 kilos in 2013. An approximate of 15 million plants have been planted since, now reoccupying 33 million acres of green land that was previously damaged. For 2014, the Arbol Misión Socialista coordinators plans to collect 600 kilos of seeds.

Community benefits

The reforestry of the venezuelan green lands through the Arbol Misión Socialista has generated 50,000 direct jobs in their nurseries and 101,191 indirect jobs as well. Rural communities continue to be educated in environmental awareness, becoming more involved with solving problems regarding their land and working together to find sustainable ways to work the forests.
