Philippines National Flag

The Philippine national flag (Filipino: pambansang watawat ng Pilipinas) is a horizontal bicolor flag with equal bands of royal blue and crimson red on the hoist and a white, equilateral triangle on the fly. A golden-yellow sun with eight major beams, each symbolizing a province, sits in the center of the triangle.

Each of the country's three main island groups—Luzon, the Visayas (albeit originally referred to the island of Panay), and Mindanao—is represented by a five-pointed golden-yellow star at each vertex of the triangle. Liberty, equality, and fraternity are symbolized by the white triangle on the flag.

This flag's use to symbolize a state of war when displayed with the red side on top, which is accomplished by turning the flag upside-down, is a unique characteristic.
