Dr. Habila Umaru, MBBS, FWACS, FACS is an Orthopedics and Trauma Surgeon at the National Hospital Abuja and Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. He is also Team Co-Lead for the Medical Makers Tibial Fracture Fixation (TFF) project, one of the winners of the Global Surgical Training Challenge.
Dr. Umaru earned his MBBS in 1990 and completed fellowships at the West African College of Surgeons in 2003 and American College of Surgeons fellowship in 2018; followed by an MSc in Health Planning and Management in 2009, and an MSc in Disaster Risk and Management in 2011, all from the University of Maiduguri. Dr. Umaru holds memberships and administrative roles in several Nigerian and American healthcare institutions.
Dr. Umaru’s current research is focused on the inappropriate use of prophylactic antibiotics, highlighting how non-compliance with standard antibiotic prophylaxis protocols (SAPs) can increase surgical site infections, lead to resistant organisms, and escalate healthcare costs.
