'''Ongoing Earthquake Recap And Information Updates'''
To recap, there are now (as of 1/13/2011) 316,000 confirmed fatalities from the earthquake of January 12th, 2010 as the death toll continues to rise. There are now estimated to be 1.5 million homeless Haitian earthquake refugees living in makeshift camps [http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/32/AcampamentoHaiti2.jpg]. 400,000 earthquake refugees evacuated from Port-Au-Prince to Jeremie[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Jeremie][http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Haitians_fill_ferry_in_Port-au-Prince_2010-01-16.jpg]and to more permanent refugee camps located near villages in the north of Haiti. The President of Haiti has made an urgent plea for tent shelters. The hospital ship USNS Comfort arrived at Port-Au-Prince on 1/20/2010. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USNS_Comfort_%28T-AH-20%29] By U.N. order, as of 1/21 no assistance had been sent to Leogane, the city closest to the epicenter of the quake and where 10,000 were (are) believed to be entombed in ruins. A contingent of British and Canadian search and rescue teams (Rapid-UK) finally arrived there almost two weeks after the quake. AS of 2/2/2010, other cities surrounding the epicenter had received little or no rescue assistance. The people of the city of Leogane asked reporters why they had been forsaken by the rest of the world. For weeks the survivors waited. This delay of medical assistance necessitated the amputations of infected arms and legs, often without anesthetic and were being performed in some cases by doctors, who because of lack of medical supplies, were forced to use hacksaws looted from demolished hardware stores. The number of amputations is estimated to approach that of the Crimean War and of the U.S. Civil War. [http://jhmas.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/pdf_extract/48/4/454] In addition, delayed surgeries are estimated to have cost approximately 20,000 lives per day.
10/6/2014: The former U.S.-backed dictator of Haiti, Jean-Claude Duvalier, known as "Baby Doc," has died at 63. Duvalier ruled Haiti from 1971 to 1986, taking power after the death of his father who had ruled since 1957. Baby Doc’s death came just months after a Haitian court ruled that he could be charged with crimes against humanity under international law, and that he could also be held responsible for abuses by the army and paramilitary forces under his rule. Under his regime, hundreds of political prisoners held in a network of prisons died from their extraordinarily cruel treatment. Baby Doc’s government repeatedly closed independent newspapers and radio stations. Journalists were beaten, in some cases tortured, jailed and forced to leave the country. Despite his human rights record, Baby Doc was a close ally of the United States. After years of exile in France, he returned to Haiti in 2011 and became an ally of Haiti’s current president Michel Martelly. We are joined by Haitian activist and writer Jean Saint-Vil and journalist Amy Wilentz, author of "The Rainy Season: Haiti Since Duvalier." 1/12/2015: Today marks the 5 year anniversary of the Earthquake in Haiti. Most of the promised aid never materialized.
10/12/2015: Columbus Day? The island of Hispaniola, upon which Haiti and the Dominican Republic now reside, was named by Columbus and was the site of his first established colony. There were already 2 million native inhabitants living on that island but within 6 years of his arrival their numbers had been reduced to less than 200.
When Spain annexed the island the natives were deemed subjects of the Queen and were forced to work to death as slave laborers. They were ordered to find gold for Columbus and those that failed to do so had their hands cut off by swords. This brutal treatment coupled with the spread of European diseases was responsible for their genocidal extermination. Columbus should be remembered as a conquistador and mass murderer who went to his grave believing he had landed in Asia, establishing an alternative trade route to the Silk Road through Afghanistan, never realizing it was really the western hemisphere. That credit goes to Amerigo Vespucci, for whom the ENTIRE western hemisphere is named. He lived from March 9, 1454 – February 22, 1512 and was an Italian explorer, financier, navigator and cartographer who first demonstrated that Brazil and the West Indies did not represent Asia's eastern outskirts.
The United Stated of America stole its land, exterminating the Native Americans (and buffalo), co-opted the name of the western hemisphere, and built its plantations and capitol building on backs of African slaves purchased from a rich French slave colony which the island of Hispaniola eventually became.
In 1804 the Haitian slaves rebelled, slaughtering every last slave owner in a single night using machetes and then successfully defeated contingents of French and British soldiers sent to put down the rebellion. This is the only successful slave rebellion in human history. The response of the USA was to set up a navel blockade and embargo against Haiti to force Haiti to pay 14 billion (2015) dollars in financial reparations to France for the loss of their slave trade colony(paid off around 1950) and has repeated militarily invaded Haiti to impose dictatorships, impose sanctions and depose/kidnap democratically elected leaders. Abolish the Monroe Doctrine/U.S. Imperialism and Free Haiti!

At 7:00 a.m. EDT (11:00 UTC) October 4, Matthew made landfall near Les Anglais, Haiti with winds of 145 mph (230 km/h),[22] becoming the first Category 4 storm to do so since Hurricane Cleo in 1964. Major bridges have been washed away by extensive flooding. The La Digue Bridge has been destroyed, cutting off the southern peninsula from Port-au-Prince. 80% of homes in Jeremie have been destroyed. 350,000 people are in need of assistance. Haitians’ temporary protected status, or TPS, is set to expire on July 22.
