Description
English: Catabolism of glucose by glycolysis produces two ATP and NADH, but requires NADH to be regenerated to NAD+ in order to continue. If oxygen is not present, and the electron transport chain can not run, then in some cells fermentation can be used to regenerate NAD+ and allow glycolysis to continue. This is an example of fermentation of pyruvate to produce lactic acid and oxidize NADH to NAD+.
