This is a diagram of a basic cogeneration system. The generator produces electricity while the waste heat from said generator is moved into the water tank. From here water is heated with little use of natural gas, and is relesed into the 'loop' and steam coming from this is used for heating. Then once the water completes the loop. it is re-used and re-heated to be thrown into the 'loop' again. (this picture came from Carbonetix2
