Following up on references display[edit | edit source]

I want to bring back up this issue brought up by User:Shapoklyak a while ago. We'll begin updating some of our templates to allow for better referencing, having DOI links for some articles and other new capabilities. Perhaps we can discuss this further, since User:Sophivorus is currently working on improving specific parts of Appropedia and this might be a useful project. --Emilio (talk) 16:27, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

For the specific issue that I brought up, the most robust solution would probably be to adopt Wikipedia's templates. However, this would imply changing existing Appropedia pages. It is probably easy to change "accessdate" into "access-date", a bit less easy to detect when "work" should become "website". Shapoklyak (talk) 19:25, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Shapoklyak, Emilio I usually suggest developing local versions of templates, because Wikipedia templates are generally way more complicated than smaller wikis require. However, in this case, given that Appropedia is fairly academic and favors good referencing, and considering how awfully complicated good referencing is, I agree that updating the local templates from the Wikipedia versions would be the most robust (and maintainable) solution. Also, their development has been mostly backwards-compatible, so I don't expect many references to break here after an update. Sophivorus (talk) 19:58, 10 December 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Shapoklyak, Sophivorus In that case, I'll add to Appropedia:Site development as part of our wishlist for implementation (including DOI for academic pages). I think it will be super useful given the number of citations that Appropedia gets every year. —Emilio (talk)
@Emilio Today I tried again to import the citation module used on the English Wikipedia (Wikipedia:Module:Citation) but failed. Apparently one of the submodules (Wikipedia:Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration) is so large that Appropedia timeouts before finishing the save (or perhaps there's some kind of error in the submodule that causes the timeout). So we're still relying on our legacy Template:Citation, though it seems to be serving us well enough for now. Sophivorus (talk) 18:44, 3 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Help porting external content[edit | edit source]

Author asked for help porting this to appropedia - http://coaching-cadres.fr/bs/Trap_Piege_Frelons.html -- Joshua Pearce (talk) 11:41, 10 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

We're happy to help! Is the author okay with licensing and all? Should we connect with them? Thanks!
@Maidandre could I please defer this to you? Thanks a lot! Emilio (talk) 17:02, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi guys! Happy to help here! Let me know when you have permission from the author and I'll start porting this. :) Maidandre (talk) 17:43, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So I was checking the project out and it seems to be protected under a non-commercial license. I'd like to make sure the author is OK with releasing it as CC-BY-SA or if an exception is needed from our side. Maidandre (talk) 18:40, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

CASwiki development[edit | edit source]

Hi User:Sm-neutron, thanks for your email and interest in helping with CASwiki. A few ideas and comments to start with.

It's good that you were in touch via fb, and so to help with a positive dialogue it'd be good also if we had more about you via your user page right here in Appropedia. Also sharing more of your ideas via the village pump as introduction to the community sounds good.

Based on what I can see of your interests, what I'm noticing is 'Community organising', New York City, and 'Community hubs'. I'm inclined to focus on the first two for now, but if you like do you want to explain a bit more what 'Community hubs' means to you?

I'm hoping you won't mind if I suggest a few things for you to take closer look at first:

Then how do you feel about the idea of creating or at least starting off a page on 'Community organising', as a sort of global topic article? Or if you prefer something more specific like 'Community organising in the USA'?

I'm guessing you've already had a look at the NYC articles. Have you had a good look at Resources New York City? Do you want to say a bit more about how you see those articles might be further developed? perhaps via the NYC article talk pages? City pages don't of course all have to be developed the same way but just as an example: The London (UK) pages now have separate articles for most of the London Boroughs with possibility for even more localised pages. I've been tempted for some time to start off an article for 'The Bronx community action'... What do you think?

I won't have much time for any sort of longish chats over the next few days, but if you have specific questions please feel free to leave them for me and I'll try and get back to you as soon as I can. Philralph (talk) 10:51, 21 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi User:Philralph. thanks so much for your great ideas above, and for reaching out here to discuss these ideas and topics. I'm glad to be able to discuss things with you. I will try to add a little more to my user page. by the way, my user name at Wikipedia is Wikipedia:User:sm8900, so you are welcome to view my user page there as well. It is much more detailed.
For me, one main benefit of Appropedia, in addition to the copious information on sustainable technologies, is its ability to let specific activist groups post updates on their efforts, to enable others to learn more and to get involved. so that is what I mean by "community hubs." as you know wikipedia is an encyclopedia of knowledge, so it can only post data based on published articles on past efforts. Appropedia has a different role; its role in promoting current efforts, and its willingness to allow current active groups and activists to post ongoing notices of their current efforts is highly useful. this to me is what typifies a "hub;" namely it is more akin to an active bulletin board, than to a static encyclopedia article; it is an active resource for current efforts in organizing, rather than simply an encyclopedia article on efforts that already took place in the past.
I'm glad to answer your question about a few ways that such pages can be developed. for one thing, we could encourage activist groups to create new pages here to let people know about new activist causes they are now working on. there are a few ways to let them create pages that are easy to navigate:
  • the people who edit these activist pages could make sure to include links to the main central page or "hub" for their local city, such as New York City. this would enable all activist pages to have one central page to make navigation easier.
  • the editor who creates the new page could make sure to edit the central "hub" page, so that visitors to the hub page could easily find their way to currently active efforts.
  • as an additional possible idea, perhaps we could even have a separate navbox to group all activist pages for a specific locality. this would serve as a useful technical resource for helping people to find these pages.
  • lastly, one reason that I like categories so much is that even if an editor omits to add new links to their own page on the central hub pages, as long as they add their page to a category, that will always be a reliable way for other users to find it.
I hope that helps to answer some of your great questions and ideas above. I'm willing to explore and to discuss these items more in depth as time goes on. it's great to be in touch and to hear your ideas on these areas. you are welcome to write any time, with any questions, ideas; and any feedback on my own efforts is always welcome. thanks for all your input. see you.
One more thing, I will be glad to read the articles that you suggest above. Also, I will think about your idea for creating a general page on community organizing. I can try to add some input, once I think that over a bit. thanks. --Sm-neutron (talk) 15:32, 21 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question re possible template[edit | edit source]

Would it be ok to copy and paste the source code for the template below from Wikipedia, for use here?

I may have some other items in the future that I might suggest adding from Wikipedia. I simply find this template useful, simply as a useful way to visually navigate between pages. thanks. --Sm-neutron (talk) 03:35, 23 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi! I haven't used this template before, but we should consider whether it wouldn't be easy to edit with the visual editor. Having said that, we do have mw:Extension:Header Tabs installed. Does this work? — Emilio (talk) 19:05, 24 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Use Template:Tabs instead, cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 14:15, 14 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Name change note[edit | edit source]

Hello all! Just a heads up: Humboldt State University has changed its name to Cal Poly Humboldt. There are many links and references to "HSU" and "Humboldt State University". I did an automatic change from Humboldt State University to Cal Poly Humboldt and it seems to be going well. I have not addressed the HSUs yet. --Lonny (talk) 00:03, 28 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Comments on new sidebar[edit | edit source]

Hi @Sophivorus. it is great to see the new sidebar for Appropedia!! i have one question though; is it possible to make the sidebar display here permanently and continuously? It appears to me that right now, the user would need to click the menu button on the upper-left corner. feel free to let me know. thanks!!

Also, I have a question; what happens to older sections, here at Village Pump? do they eventually get archived? where are the archives stored? thanks!! --Sm-neutron (talk) 02:00, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Sm-neutron Hi! I'm glad you're liking the new sidebar. Once you click on the upper-left menu icon, the sidebar will display and stay visible permanently and continuously until you decide to hide it (does it work ok for you?). This will also happen with anonymous (non-logged in) users, but I should mention that when someone visits Appropedia for the very first time, the default is to not show the sidebar (until they click it). I thought this was a sensible default for a cleaner and more content-focused first impression to new users. Sophivorus (talk) 17:54, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sm-neutron Regarding the Village Pump archives, I just added a "Browse old topics" button to the #top, check it out! Sophivorus (talk) 17:59, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sophivorus: thanks for your reply. that is very helpful. by the way, regarding the sidebar, actually, I would disagree. I think the first impression is much, much better if they do see a sidebar, than if they don't. trust me the site looks better with it on. and without it, the site looks too bare. I would greatly suggest that you simply leave it on permanently. I really appreciate your help. thanks. --Sm-neutron (talk) 03:58, 8 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sm-neutron Hi! Considering your suggestion and after looking at some other websites, I do agree that the sidebar should be visible by default. However, believe it or not, it isn't as easy as changing a default value, so it may take me a few days to implement. Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 13:43, 8 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, that's terrific. I appreciate the reply. thanks!! --Sm-neutron (talk) 17:41, 8 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question re Template:Solar navbox[edit | edit source]

Hi. I am trying to look over Template:Solar navbox, just to get familiar with how a ypical navbox works here. I have some questions:

  • How do I view the documentation page, for this navbox? I can see a transclusion template with the following coding:
<noinclude>{{Documentation for footers}}</noinclude>

I don't seem to be able to figure out how to view the page this is actually pointing to.

  • Also, here is my second question, which is related to the first question, above. where would I view the coding which designates the categroies for Template:Solar navbox? I am sure this is related to the first question, since generally the category codes would go on the documentation page.

I appreciate any help. thanks. --Sm-neutron (talk) 03:39, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Sm-neutron Hi! In order to avoid writing and maintaining hundreds of documentation pages for hundreds of similar templates, I created standard generic documentation pages. For example, you can find the standard documentation for navboxes at Template:Documentation/navbox (and yes they are categorized from there). These standard documentation pages can be refined and improved in many ways, and the nice thing about them is that when we do, the documentation of many hundreds of templates improves automatically. However, feel free to create a unique documentation for your navbox if the standard one won't suffice. Sophivorus (talk) 18:05, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New possible navbox format[edit | edit source]

Hi everyone. I have copied over a different type of Navbox from Wikipedia, and revised it below into a possible item that we could use here. Please note, I am posting this as much to show you the different coding and formatting for this item, as I am to show you the content.

if you view the template below, and click "edit source," you will see that the coding for this item is different from the Navbox code currently used here. both are fine; I simply wanted to illustrate another way of formatting such items, see User:Sm-neutron/navbox_blank. Thanks. --Sm-neutron (talk) 05:44, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Sm-neutron Hi again! I think your navbox looks awesome, you were just invoking Module:Navbox directly rather than doing it through Template:Navbox, so I just changed that. Other than that, I think your code is perfect and it's Template:Solar navbox that could benefit from some updates to the newer, simpler syntax (we'll get to that eventually). As to the content, I'll check it out eventually, cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 18:24, 7 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question re Template:Start tab[edit | edit source]

Hi. I am trying to copy and paste the template for Wikipedia:Template:Start tab, in order to get it to be usable here. I have tried to do so here by creating a page here called Template:Start tab. I also copied over Template:Tab, whicbh seems to be required to make this template work correctly.

However, I seem to be getting error messages when I try to use it. can anyone please assist? I tried to use this template on this page, to create some headers:

thanks! --Sm-neutron (talk) 11:43, 11 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Sm-neutron Hi! I've been wanting to write a decent template for tabs for some time now. Thanks to your request, I went ahead and did it. Check out Template:Tabs! Hopefully it should already be enough for your needs, but let me know of any bugs or missing features. FYI, here at Appropedia we've been recently leaning towards not reusing Wikipedia templates (much less Wikipedia template documentation) because they are always overkill for our needs, full of complexities that are just not needed here and make maintenance, improvement and styling much more difficult (just compare the wikitext of Template:Tabs with that of the Wikipedia equivalent). Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 12:05, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sm-neutron BTW, I also just finished creating a script (at MediaWiki:Tabs.js) that basically turns sections wrapped with <div class="tabs"> into tabs, see for example User:Sophivorus/sandbox. The script still needs some refinements (feedback welcome) but it may already be useful. Regards, Sophivorus (talk) 13:46, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
yup, this looks great. it will be very useful. thanks!! --Sm-neutron (talk) 16:49, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New item: Template:Climate topics intro[edit | edit source]

Hi. I have made an updated version of the navigational box above. as you may note from my comments above, I posted the navbox above simply as a model for how the syntax of a navbox can be done, and how the format above can help to guide people to topics. the navbox below is obviously a revised version, but this item is meant as an actual navbox for usage, rather than a mere model. I hope you don't mind me posting this item here for review. Just wanted to provide the updated version. You can feel free to archive my earlier message above, if you wish, see Template:Climate topics intro. Thanks. --Sm-neutron (talk) 20:33, 11 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Sm-neutron Hi! I just adapted your navbox to a meta template I'm developing called Template:Footer. The reason for preferring this template rather than Template:Navbox is because Wikipedia templates are just overkill for Appropedia, are difficult or impossible to style or modify, and are often mobile unfriendly. In the case of navboxes, they are so mobile-unfriendly that they are even hidden from mobile devices by default! I think navboxes should try to be flat rather than nested, so as to be easier for users to understand and for developers to adapt to mobile devices. Of course I don't expect you to absolutely love my changes just yet (or maybe yes?) but I trust you'll understand my reasoning, see the bigger picture, and let me know what could be better so I can fix it. Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 14:32, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wide table display issue[edit | edit source]

Hi All,

When I view Table of battery comparison the last column of the table does not show up (I can see little bit of the left side of the last column). The last column should be Cold temp performance. Do you find the same issue? Any thoughts?

Thanks, --Lonny (talk) 02:37, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Lonny Hi! I just modified the skin so that it no longer crops tables (or any content, for that matter) that goes beyond boundaries. That being said, for your specific table, I also added the class "compact" which makes it more compact and so fits within boundaries. Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 14:24, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Weird little - Error! is not a number.[edit | edit source]

On the page CCAT Small Pond Revitalization there appear two little warnings near the top of the page. The errors appear as orange exclamation marks and their hovertext is ""Error!" is not a number." Does anyone know what this is from? --Lonny (talk) 19:04, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Lonny Fixed! The error was because we're getting the pageview data once a month from Google Analytics and it seems the script that does so failed for some pages. You'll notice that the "impact" field has dissappeared now. It'll appear again once the script re-runs. Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 19:32, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Got it. Thank you! Lonny (talk) 08:19, 13 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
thanks for fixing that!! Sm-neutron (talk) 21:42, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Page data[edit | edit source]

Why does the template sometimes provide and impact value and sometimes not? --Joshua Pearce (talk) 19:38, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@J.M.Pearce Hi! The bug is temporary. The data gets updated once a month but this month there were a few errors so some pages aren't displaying their impact. I already fixed the cause of the error and I'll try to re-run the script before the end of the month, cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 21:44, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Automatic translations[edit | edit source]

Hi all! I developed a script that is able to translate any wiki page to any language using Google Translate. These translations will be indexed by search engines, making them discoverable by users that search in other languages. This script has the potential to multiply the size, reach and impact of Appropedia! Check out Appropedia:Translations to add your favorite pages to the translation queue! Category:Appropedia[edit | edit source]

Hi again! I've done some organization, merging, updates and improvements to pages and categories at Category:Appropedia. Crucially, I archived a lot of pages that haven't changed since 2008-2010 at the new Category:Appropedia archive. The strategy is to archive old pages so that current pages stay visible and updated. This strategy has the great advantage of being sustainable: it's easy to understand and implement, so we can all do it (see Template:Archive). Cheers! Form for literature reviews[edit | edit source]

@Lonny, J.M.Pearce, Emilio Hi! Following Emilio's suggestion, I created Example literature review to demonstrate the possibilities of the new Template:Form to organize, structure and ease the creation of literature reviews. Check it out! Of course the form, templates and page structure can be modified to suit your needs, and I've devoted some time to the documentation of Template:Form so that you can experiment yourselves, but let me know if you'd like some extra functionality like a new field type or if I can help further. Hope it helps, cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 13:52, 26 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Advice for my first photovoltaic system[edit | edit source]

@Lonny, J.M.Pearce Hi! After reading To Catch the Sun, I want to buy my first photovoltaic system (panels, battery, charge controller, inverter, etc).

My immediate goal is to learn, reduce my carbon footprint, and power a few devices "through the window" (that is, I don't want to tap the houses' electric system because I'm only renting this place until the end of the year). Devices would be my laptop, phone, wifi, TV, a few lamps, and perhaps a washing machine, if the system suffices. However, in the future, I'd like to be able to scale up the system so that I can power my house (when I build it) so I'm investing in an "oversized" charge controller and inverter.

With this in mind, I've been reading and researching some options at my local online marketplace and here is my current setup:

This is my first attempt at building a photovoltaic system and I don't have much background in electricity either, so I'm not very confident. For example, I only recently learned there's a difference between PWM and MPPT controllers and between pure and modified wave inverters, so I worry I may still be missing something important. Do you see any red flags or possible issues I should be aware? Thanks for any advice!! Sophivorus (talk) 21:51, 13 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Well, I ended up buying the parts mentioned above except that I got this lead acid battery instead of the lithium ion one. Will share the results when I set it up and hopefully make some Appropedia article about it. Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 19:09, 27 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Empowerment Technologies[edit | edit source]

Learning experiences

Empowerment Technology or ICT is a subject or a lesson to all students specially me.

If you don't know how to understand this subject, it will be difficult. Some people find it challenging to complete all of the ICT tasks or projects. However, as a student, you have a responsibility to all ICT students.

As a student, I am learning a lot about ICT, particularly computers and accounting. We didn't use computers last school year, in short, we didn't have a computer subject, so it's not easy, but if you understand it correctly, it can assist you a lot. I've learnt how to use Microsoft Web, Excel, and even other websites like Piktochart, Change .org, and the one I'm currently using, WordPress. With all of the ICT classes, I can apply it to all of my other projects and use it in my daily life.

ICT, or information and communication technology, can help us comprehend computers, their worth, and what they can do for us. It could be for the better or for the worse, but we should do the correct way since we study and grasp the teachings and values in ICT.

How to list external links[edit | edit source]

Hi! I am editing some pages and I'd like to ask for opinions on how to list external links: Before or after references? I wonder which option could be more useful or make more sense.

See examples here:

Thanks --Irene92 (talk) 00:18, 19 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Irene92, I'd go for the Aquaponics version, simply because the external links tend to be a little more readable than the refs. Philralph (talk) 12:53, 19 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Irene92 I second the Aquaponics version (references after external links). It seems Wikipedia favors the alternative, apparently because they consider external links shouldn't be part of the article. However I think external links should be considered part of Appropedia pages, so again, I favor references after external links. Sophivorus (talk) 12:26, 27 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Event templates, proposal and request[edit | edit source]

This is mainly something to help with CASwiki pages but might be of interest beyond.

Hi @Sophivorus, I'd like to propose / request a couple of Event templates, similar to the fabulously useful News templates. Similar to those it'd be super useful to be able to use an eventslist type template to display relevant events for localities and (community action, sustainability, etc) topics.

I've redrafted some of the content of International community action events and UK community action events to show how they might display.

So similar to news template, an events template with parameters:

  • Date
  • day or days of the week if applicable (some a whole month, year or decade) - could be automated?
  • (wiki) page link, (red if no article)
  • link (url)
  • source with url as default (only displays if no article)
  • text
  • location
  • keywords

What do you think? Cheers, Philralph (talk) 13:16, 19 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Philralph Hi! I'm glad you're finding the news templates useful! I just created Template:Event and Template:Eventlist following your specifications and defined a few example events at International community action events#July and UK community action events#July, check it out! A few notes:
  1. I wasn't quite able to add support for multiple dates, so you'll have to pick one date per event for now. However, I was able to include a date-text parameter to control the visible text of the date. You can use that to communicate date ranges. If I figure out how to improve this I will, but I think it's a good start.
  2. I added support for multiple locations (see the template documentation) and copied the solution to Template:News.
  3. I didn't quite understand what you meant when you said that the source should only display if there's no article. Could you clarify that?
I really hope this new template becomes useful. Let me know of any bugs or further requests! Sophivorus (talk) 14:56, 27 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sophivorus , Hi! Thanks very much for this! Looking forward to testing them out.
  • I imagine we'll still need a separate text parameter, see for example UK_community_action_events#October (2nd event listed), text needs to come after internal link, and before source. Maybe also should be some kind of limit, e.g. on number of words perhaps?
  • re the source, thinking about it, maybe it's fine if it (plus the url) is just optional (as if there's an article that'll include the source). So no need for it to display, but if wanted it can be put in and displayed, and that's fine as well. Hope that makes a bit more sense now!
Philralph (talk) 15:44, 28 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Philralph Hi! I just added the "text" parameter. Regarding the source, does it work ok now? Or does it need some adjustment? Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 14:45, 9 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sophivorus thanks for that! Yes source ok, no adjustment needed. Could Template:Eventlist display events in chronological order, and so consistent with eg UK community action events? At present displaying in reverse of that, eg see Community action UK#Coming up. Thanks, Philralph (talk) 12:08, 10 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Philralph Done, cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 13:22, 11 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Lonny Fixed! Some weeks ago I changed Extension:SimpleMathJax for Extension:Math due to performance reasons (the former slowed down the site considerably). It seems the new Extension:Math doesn't support the use of the middle dot · and requires \cdot instead, so I just searched and replaced all instances of the middle dot. I also just created Category:Pages with math errors to track and fix future math syntax errors. Cheers! PS, thanks for noticing and appreciating all the new features and improvements. :-) Sophivorus (talk) 17:13, 18 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Project Data issue[edit | edit source]

Hi All, I wanted to point out that the project data for Redwood Discovery Museum inspirograph is wrong. I am not sure if this was bot generated or human generated, but it was not added by the original team. I am pointing it out here for it to be corrected, but more so to make sure that there isn't a similar issue happening with other generated project data boxes on other pages. THANKS! --Lonny (talk) 02:35, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Lonny Hi! It seems to have been a human error, hopefully a one-off mistake. I just fixed it, cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 16:44, 18 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can we embed maps?[edit | edit source]

Hi @Sophivorus and @Emilio, yesterday I came across a fantastic mapping project covering "Ibero-America". I've put a couple of links on El Salvador community action#Maps and Argentina community action#Maps (map for Buenos Aires). These maps seem fantastically relevant to CASwiki city and country pages, and it'd be brilliant if we could embed them on our city and country pages. Maps and data appear to be all creative commons licensed. More here: https://www.civics.cc/en/acerca It's also highly relevant to a couple of maps and related wiki pages I'm currently developing: Citizen Action Networks near you and CAN support map. More on that later. Cheers Philralph (talk) 08:58, 23 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Philralph Hi, yes! I just created Widget:Civics for you, check out the documentation there and the examples at El Salvador community action#Maps and Argentina community action#Maps. Unfortunately, it seems Civics doesn't offer an "embed URL", that is, a URL that contains JUST the map, so the menu and other interface elements are embedded too. Still, it may be useful. Let me know! Sophivorus (talk) 19:18, 24 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sophivorus, Fantastic! this feels like a really important development for CASwiki. Many thanks! Cheers. Philralph (talk) 07:23, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sophivorus, Hi, following on from this, I'm wanting to link to (and sort of integrate) these maps from within Citizen Action Networks near you#CAN map. I've done this with one example "Neighborhood initiatives, Madrid", entering the link as a external one. Is there a better way of doing this? A separate parameter for internal links? Something like this might this help encourage cross over and more sharing of content? Thanks, Philralph (talk) 14:45, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Sophivorus, if there's no problem putting internal links (but as ext. ones) in the (ext) link parameter, I'm happy to carry on doing this. There'll be about 20 pages initially. Philralph (talk) 11:23, 26 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Philralph Hi! I think using external links is fine, especially if it's only a few. Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 15:16, 26 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Development of Citizen Action Networks maps[edit | edit source]

Hi @Sophivorus, Citizen Action Networks near you currently has a global CAN map. Due to the potentially very large numbers, but also to display the info in a more helpful way, I've been thinking for some time about ways of disaggregating the map and the data.

To start with I'm thinking of setting up separate maps using tabs for broad areas similar to those on Community action#Near you, but eventually might want to move to something like city regions similar to how maps are presented on Civics eg Argentina_community_action#Maps. If I set this up with sub pages eg Citizen Action Networks near you/UK/data, etc would it then be possible to combine again to display a global map or for map for larger areas?

Longer term, and I realise this might be a big ask, so would want to be sure was really useful first, but I'm wondering if one started with separate topic maps eg CANs with a climate action focus, etc. would there then be a way of combining for all topics? Would love to get your thoughts on all of this, especially the more immediate localisation / smaller areas question.

Thanks, Philralph (talk) 09:05, 17 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Philralph Hi! Sorry for the slow reply, I've been on vacation. Yes, data spread in several pages can then be combined in a single map. In fact, a few days ago I did exactly that for several maps, for example Ecovillages map. See Ecovillages map/data, Ecovillages map/data2, Ecovillages map/data3, Ecovillages map/data4 and the wikitext at Ecovillages map, especially the "subobjects-of" parameter to understand what I did, and let me know if anything is not clear!
Spreading the data of big maps in several pages is becoming necessary because when any data page is saved, the software requests the coordinates of the locations to an external service (https://nominatim.openstreetmap.org) so 50 locations means 50 requests! Therefore saving becomes very slow, and if the data page is too big, the request may actually timeout and fail. Therefore, to reduce this risk, big data pages should be spread in smaller ones (about 50 per page sounds ok I think).
Hope this helps, let me know your thoughts! Sophivorus (talk) 12:29, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Sophivorus, hope you had an enjoyable vacation. Thanks, Yes, spreading the data looks good. I'll make a start on evolving the CAN maps, cheers, Philralph (talk) 10:30, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
