Welcome to the new home of the Applied Sustainability Research Group housed within the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Queen's University. This research group was run by Dr. Pearce (Queen's faculty page) and focuses on applied sustainability, which is the application of science and innovation to ensure a better quality of life for all, now and into the future, in a just and equitable manner, whilst living within the limits of supporting ecosystems. For a full list of our recent publications organized by category go here.

Queen's Applied Sustainability Research Group - Open Source Research Policy[edit | edit source]
The group makes its best effort to open source its literature reviews and protocols as the research is taking place and provides direct access to our research protocols, experimental designs, and equipment. In addition, the group publishes in open access journals as much as possible and posts its pre-prints on Q-Space. To browse pre-prints from the group by subject go here. Normally these pre-prints/final drafts are released under CC-BY-SA as soon as we are able. You can also read more details about completed projects here. Finally, we have begun publishing our entire workflows with all code, design schematics, results, etc. at myExperiment.

University submits solar panel project applications[2]
2011-07-21
Queen's has submitted applications to the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) that would allow for the installation of hundreds of new solar panels on university property.
"We are very hopeful that the applications are successful," says Ann Browne, Associate Vice-Principal (Facilities). "This is an exciting project for Queen's that demonstrates our commitment to sustainability, both on campus and as part of the global community."
If the applications are approved, solar panels will be installed at Victoria Hall (75 kilowatts), An Clachan (250 kilowatts), Duncan McArthur Hall (500 kilowatts), the Queen's Centre (200 kilowatts), and the Queen's University Biological Station (QUBS) (10,000 kilowatts). The total energy produced would be enough to provide power to about 1,100 homes per year.
The green energy created by the solar panels would supply the Ontario energy grid, and the QUBS system could also lead to research projects examining solar energy.
Under the agreement, Johnson Controls Inc. would operate the panel systems owned by one of the company's financial partners. The financial partners would receive revenue from the energy generated, while Queen's would receive a monthly lease payment from the companies.
Queen's expects to receive a contract offer letter from the OPA in the next 90 days, and installation of the rooftop panels could begin as early as this winter. Installation of the QUBS panels, which would be ground-mounted, would be a lengthier process due to the scope of the project and not start until the summer of 2012.
Safety[edit | edit source]
A tip of the hat to Canada and Photovoltaics |

- The Occupational Health and Safety Act requires that all employees, or supervisors of employees, who work with or who are in the proximity of chemicals receive WHMIS Training. Registration
- Maintain your WHMIS with the refresher
- Day 1 Safety Checklist [3]
- The non-credit course on human research participant protection (CHRPP) will be mandatory for all incoming graduate students who will engage in research involving human subjects.

Assorted Tips/Instructions[edit | edit source]
I am published - now what?[edit | edit source]
As you know getting a paper in the peer reviewed literature does not guarantee it will be widely read. In the group we then take the following steps:
- Write up a summary page in Appropedia of your article and place it in this category - it should link back to your literature review and any protocols you used. It should also have key findings and enhanced figures. It must have the full citation for your paper with a link both to the article at the journal via DOI and a link to your preprint on Q-Space. Finally, you should hyperlink all keywords within Appropedia and drop it in appropriate categories (e.g. photovoltaic).
- Format the summary appropriately and also place it on your Scitopics page - make sure to invite all co-authors to contribute to that page. SciTopics is now discontinued
- Format the pre-print for Q-space with a header showing the full citation. Include all figures and tables - make it as readable as possible and send to Dr. Pearce to post here.
- For highly scientific work we will begin to post at MyExperiment - Dr. Pearce's page there.
- Finally if your work is newsworthy we will write a summary and send it to the University Press Office to release.
Updated from MTU: As you know getting a paper in the peer reviewed literature does not guarantee it will be widely read. In the group we then take the following steps:

- Format the pre-print for with a header showing the full citation. Include all figures and tables - make it as readable as possible and send to Dr. Pearce to post MTU's pre-prints (coming soon), arXiv and HAL for technical papers or SSRN for sustainability papers and/or Qspace.
- Write up a short summary from your appropedia summary for the MTU sustainability blog, co-post on Energypedia and /or Engineering for Change and/or Technology Exchange
- Post abstract on linkedin
- Finally if your work is newsworthy we will write a summary and send it to the University Press Office to release.
