Power user features[edit source]

Great to see you working on this.

Some of the links - such as move, history & watchlist - will be rarely used, but most likely to be used by Appropedia (Edit: meant to add "power users"). (Personally, I use move but don't directly view my watchlist.) Since those power users are likely to be contributing a lot, we want to support them... so I'd be happy to at least see "move" accessible somehow. Is adding these just a matter of having the link accessible somewhere, or is it more work to display a different kind of page in the app?

About: A link at bottom of page and/or in the menu wouldn't be too intrusive, I think. Maybe a special page for mobiles that briefly covers all the basics such as license, and links to further info e.g. FAQ... like your idea next to "Footer".

Social media: People do use Twitter, FB etc from mobile... not sure how best to take advantage of that, but maybe the link could be towards the bottom of the "More..." part of the menu.

Topics & Areas: If someone downloads the app without knowing Appropedia much (& hopefully many will do that), nice browsing is important. A "Random" link could go here too.

(Ideally the random would be a random good page... is there a way it could start with a pre-programmed list and then go more generally random? Or get a page from another source such as these highlighted pages bookmarks? I think I'm asking a lot here for the first iteration, but wanted to float the idea.)

Those are my thoughts. Generally though, I like the direction. --Chriswaterguy 08:08, 23 May 2011 (PDT)

I'm not actually building an app at the moment. I'm just trying to create a good mobile skin for the site.--Tahnok 11:31, 23 May 2011 (PDT)
Yeah, sorry, I realized after I'd written it but I see I didn't change all my references... (it was late & I was fading). Most of the comments still apply (topic browsing).
Re apps & skins: One option for an app is just to have the a link to launch the default browser. (Perhaps forcing the mobile skin in case it's not recognized, but that's probably not needed.) I've seen that done with Facebook (the "F" app I think) and it was actually a really popular app. Not the perfect option, but it's a way to get into Android market and give people a handy launch icon with the Appropedia logo - and I think the same "app" would work with other phones as well. Anyway, that depends on the skin to make it look smooth.
Btw, I guess you've done some searching for e.g. mobile skin mediawiki. There may be other efforts worth building on. --Chriswaterguy 20:28, 23 May 2011 (PDT)
