How to make lye from ashes

Commercial lyes can be bought in tins from pharmacies in larger towns, and these are a standard strength to give consistent results. However, if they are not available or affordable, lye can also be made from ashes. Fit a tap near to the bottom of a large (e.g. 250 litre) plastic or wooden barrel/tub. Do not use aluminium because the lye will corrode it and the soap will be contaminated. Make a filter inside, around the tap hole, using several bricks or stones covered with straw. Fill the tub with ashes and pour boiling water over them until water begins to run from the tap. Then shut the tap and let the ashes soak. The ashes will settle to less than one quarter of their original volume, and as they settle, add more ashes until the tub is full again. Ashes from any burned plant material are suitable, but those from banana leaf/stem make the strongest lye, and those from apple wood make the whitest soap. If a big barrel is not available, or smaller amounts of [1]

I'm not exactly sure what you were trying to do with the table. In some cases, I also insert
to make it start a new line. Did you want a single column table? Or multi-column table? Tell me which page and section, and I will have a look (I can also look at the original). That might help me make some better help text.

I also have one more request. Would you mind writing some (hopefully positive) paragraph on your user page about your experience as a Porting Helper? Something that mentions who you are (new grad, or whatever), how many pages you were able to port, how quickly you learned, whether you felt like you had support, did it feel "productive" or made a difference. (I feel you have made a big difference!) I'm also curious if you learned anything about the content that you ported? I know that sometimes I feel like I learn from what I port, and other times it goes by too fast...

Also, would you mind adding the "Category:Porting helper" to your user page?

What I'm hoping to show is that someone can make a difference as a porting helper just by investing some hours. Don't have to be a world expert on Sustainability technology, or a wiki expert. Just interested in making a difference!

Thanks again for all you have done! I think this is really going to help boost our user engagement! I have already made changes to the main page and the community portal page in an effort to attract more folks to the cause!
