Name: Cassandra Mill
I am an Environmental Science major with a focus on ethics at Humboldt State University. I grew up in North Carolina, and have since spent time in all four corners of the United States. Writing and traveling are two of my greatest passions, and one day I hope to journey across the world recording my experiences with a focus on the intersections between human culture and the natural environment.
Interests in Technology and the Environment
- Sustainable fisheries- From dip netting in Alaska to daily fed trout in the Appalachians, I have observed a variety of fishery management techniques. I am interested in what defines appropriate management for unique environments and populations, and in particular how we can find solutions to provide a sustainable source of both sustenance and income for fishery-dependent communities. What technologies would be implemented in an appropriate management scheme?
- Watershed management- California is a classic example of watershed manipulation. The state's infrastructure of dams, reservoirs, and culverts is massive, and though it gets the job done, it is largely inefficient. I am interested in what technologies could improve the efficiency and environmental impacts of the watershed infrastructure, as well as smaller scale projects that would enable individuals to responsibly rely on their own water supply.
- "Green" Transportation- In the last couple years the terms green and automobile have been tossed together quite frequently, often as part of media campaigns by car companies. What really is the most environmentally friendly form of personal vehicle, and what public modes of transportation should our cities be implementing to drastically cut gasoline consumption?
Experience in Technology and/or the Environment
- Using simulation software to design the culvert dimensions necessary to allow salmon passage for upstream spawning.
- Online database research to write papers about the Three Gorges Dam, senses of place (how cultures occupy and define their environments, and vice versa, with a focus on Appalachia), US-Mexico conflict surrounding the Rio Grande, the plight of the Ganges, and many more.
- Everyday experiences that we all share, including owning and riding in cars, taking showers, and grabbing food out of the refrigerator.
