Some research suggests that this reduces stool formation (i.e. reduces the amount of liquid expelled from the body) in cholera cases, compared to standard oral rehydration solution recipes.

A mechanism for this is that nonabsorbed carbohydrates produce short-chain fatty acids in the colon, which enhance sodium absorption.
