Teenage Pregnancy: An uncontrollable situation in the Philippines

One of the major problems not only in the Philippines but to other countries as well, at first we ask ourselves how can this be prevented? or If not what is the best solution for this kind of problem?

According to United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), teenage pregnancy has been a rise in the Philippines since the year 2000. Their report also found that ages 15 to 19 years old is already pregnant with their first child, from the year 2000 until 2010 teenage pregnancy here in the Philippines it has been increased to 65%. By looking through this data we can say that Teenage pregnancy is not just an easy major problem.

Teen moms are increasing and getting younger also, according to Clerigo (2011) Davao Region is in the 5th rank in teenage pregnancy. The Commission on Population Region XI said that the numbers are very alarming, “These findings can be attributed in part to the fact that 44 percent of female youth from Davao Region have sexual experience,” Popcom XI said. It added that “38 percent have engaged in pre-marital sex, a giant leap from only 15% in 2002.” The report also said 2 percent of female youth aged 15-24 have had sex before age 15 and 30 percent in the 18-24 age bracket have had sex before age 18. “The age at which females had their sexual debut has also become younger at 17 years old, in contrast to 19 years old as recorded in 1994,” the agency said. Davao Region also placed as the third highest in the number of youth who engage in pre-marital sex in 2013 with 38.5 percent or 370,000, a figure higher by 15.3 points from 23.2 percent in 2002. Of this number, 295,000 or 8 in 10 participated in their first pre-marital sex encounter without any form of protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or unwanted pregnancies, Popcom XI said.

According to Gabriela Chairperson Luzviminda Ilagan blamed the lack of education on sexuality among youth as the reason why there is a prevalence of teenage pregnancy. If we would just like to know the benefits of having sex education then it would be helpful to reduce the percentage of teens getting pregnant at an early age.

Having this kind of huge number our government is also eager to fight and reduce this kind of problem. Advocacy is just everywhere, its up to you if you really wanna learn something into a advocacy but if really focus on what the message is all about then you will know what are they fighting too, Teenage pregnancy does not only happen in Highschool but also in college if you are really engaged into sexual activity then we can't do anything about that but to advise you what is the best thing to do.

On November 16,2017 the Department of Health (DOH) has already started the distribution of family planning commodities to the regional health offices, especially to the Filipino women, the government has this solution to reduce the huge large of numbers of teen moms who is already pregnant. This also means that the DOH can now include subdermal plants in its family planning program. As recommended, priority should now be given on the distribution of the estimated 250,000 implants currently being kept at the DOH warehouse. It was also reported that DOH supply for Progestin-only pill is “zero” while the supply for the injectable contraceptives has already been consumed.
