[edit] Goals for Success Metrics
Opening statement:
My Goals that follow are somewhat detailed, but given the scope of the project I am taking on I feel that these criteria necessitate this level of detailed statement for the purposes of measuring the success of this endeavor.
- The Design and results should meet the desired outcome of client.
- The Design and results should help to draw in visitors to topics they might have otherwise passed up, or overlooked.
- The Design and results should be pleasing to a majority of current members.
- The Design and results should help to draw more members to use the provided information, and make Appropedia more useful by their input and edits.
- The Design and results of this project help to make this body of knowledge more accessible to a wider audience across diverse cultural boundaries.
- Cut down load times for members to allow those with slower connections equal access.
- Expand my personal abilities to implement available Open-Source software to spread purposeful and ethical information in a free and open format.
- Build more personal professional confidence in tackling large, more complex problems with the knowledge to find an "Appropriate" solution for any client while keeping on track with my own ethics and morals.
- Continue my mental plans for my own piece of land, through the process of posting and testing the information within the resource that I am adding value to.
- Add to my growing repository of skills that I can bring to my community with an ever growing ability to teach these skills to those who need them for their own personal projects and endeavors.
- Spread the passion for open source business models through my actions and interactions with those people that I come into contact with for this project.
- Make myself proud of this project for years to come.
[edit] Proposed Budget
- I have adopted an open source model for completing this project.
- By using freely available open source software, I have no need to spend monetary capital to complete my project.
- A good resource for finding software you might need is: Open Source Alternatives
- By using portable applications, I can presently work on this project from any computer that I can gain login access to, and not necessarily administrative privileges. To find portable applications that will allow you to limit mobile computer purchases visit Portable Applications
[edit] Interests in Appropriate Technology
My interests in appropriate technology evolve almost weekly. I, like most Americans, am chasing down my own version of the American dream. The major aspect of this "dream" that is affected by this body of knowledge is: owning my own home. Though I am not as close to accomplishing this as I might like, my concepts of the end result have progressively improved as my knowledge of appropriate technology has grown. Along these same my way of living has evolved with each new practice that I have discovered. The other major aspect of my life that is heavily affected by appropriate technology is my career path. I am finishing my Computer Information Systems degree, and for a period in my life I ran from these technologies, but soon discovered my own strengths lie in the use, implementation, explanation, and enjoyment of technology.
This dichotomy was troubling at first, until I realized my own ability to affect this sector of our world from the inside. On both sides of my degree, my major, and minor (Appropriate Tech) I was bridging a gap between two groups that desperately need to work together. This has become my professional interest in Appropriate Technology. My hope is to affect this situation by spreading information in the Technology industry by advocating for the use of more sustainable practices, and at the same time spreading the virtues of worldwide communication to groups that might otherwise frown upon new information technologies.
[edit] Experience in Appropriate Technology
My experience in appropriate technology is limited to the classes I have completed in the minor at Humboldt State University, and my own personal experiences in my home life. I have a lot of basic practices that I follow: extensive recycling, composting, care in purchasing, limiting travel, transportation choices, and reuse. I spread my knowledge to those who will listen among my own social circles, and gain new knowledge and practices in this manner as well.
I am an advocate for community driven software, and currently a big fan of the Ubuntu blend of the Linux operating system. I have made a decision to avoid buying software at all cost since there is almost always an open source option freely available.
