Three stone fires
From Appropedia
Three stone fires, a fire with three stones on which to balance a cooking vessel, are a very basic technology used throughout the world where other options are not available. It is typically an inefficient use of resources and produces much smoke which causes many health problems - especially for the eyes and lungs, and especially when used indoors. For these reasons improved cookstoves are widely promoted.
However, it is also possible to build more efficient three-stone fires, using three pieces of wood, and pushing them slowly into the fire, burning only the ends of the sticks.[1]
