Tepache being sold on the street in Mexico.

Tepache is a traditional Mexican beverage that is made by fermenting pineapple rinds for a very short period of time. It is often flavored with cinnamon and brown sugar, and served mixed with some beer.

Is there alcohol in tepache?

Tepache has very little alcohol, usually about 2% ABV. Because it ferments for so short a time, it's an easy one to make at home. In Mexico, where the drink originates, it is often sold chilled by street vendors, sometimes with a splash of beer in it to up the alcohol content.

Tepache dates back to pre-colombian Mexico, making it a centuries old favorite. It is believed that the earliest forms of Tepache were made either by the Nahua people of central Mexico or the Mayans. For the Mayans, Tepache was a sacred drink to which they would add different aromatics depending on its intended use.
