Use current date as a parameter. This lets other users see how current the notice is.

E.g.

displays as:

[edit] Notes on template design

This probably needs to be more sophisticated, giving the reader an idea of how long they should wait before considering the work "abandoned." But keeping it simple is also good and less confusing, and it's very simple for now.
