[edit] Deprecated

This template is deprecated - no longer in use - for reasons explained under #Automatic.

This page needs review for grammar, spelling and/or layout.
You can help by editing this page.

Pages using it should be updated and then this page deleted. (It's not a copyedit job but I didn't know a suitable tag - we need a {{wikignome help}} template.).

{{{1}}} (PDF)

[edit] Purpose

Used to highlight that a link points to a PDF file. This may help the user to choose in advance what action is to be taken on the link itself (PDF files may take time to download and display on some systems, and their use on many websites is not compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines(Wikipedia link)).

[edit] Usage

The following lines:

{{PDFlink|[http://www.example.com/Link.pdf]}}
{{PDFlink|[[Media:TIDES BOARDS FIRST DRAFT SMALL.pdf]]}}

yields:

http://www.example.com/Link.pdf (PDF)

Media:TIDES BOARDS FIRST DRAFT SMALL.pdf (PDF)

[edit] Automatic

This is no longer needed for Firefox, opera and probably others, but not Internet Explorer. A pdf icon will be automatically placed on external pdf links. So:

http://www.example.com/Link.pdf

yields:

http://www.example.com/Link.pdf

Presumably it will work soon enough for Internet Explorer, and if it doesn't work, it's not a huge problem anyway - Window users should normally have no problem automatically opening PDF documents. So we should probably deprecate (stop using) this template. It just makes things complicated, especially for new users.
